User-Agent: Opera/7.23 (Windows NT 5.1; U) [en] Build Identifier: Mozilla Thunderbird 0.4RC2 (20031204) Previous/Next buttons refuse to work when viewing a message in a separate window. Keyboard shortcuts (f/b) work properly. Originally, the buttons weren't there. I had to customly insert them into the toolbar. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Open a message 2. Right click on the main panel > Customize 3. Drag Previous and Next buttons onto the panel 4. Click Done 5. Try clicking the buttons Actual Results: Nothing ... nothing at all. Expected Results: Moved onto the previous or next message in the inbox. I'm using the default theme in RC2. Yesterday, before I upgraded to RC2 from 0.3, the buttons worked. After one system reboot, only "Next" was working. After another reboot, both previous and next buttons stopped working. Extensions: -Get all messages -Quote Colors 0.1b (not upgraded since the move from 0.3) -RAF v0.0.2 [2003 19 24] (not upgraded since the move from 0.3) -SmoothWheel v0.32 (2003-08-02) -Enigmail v0.82.4

Had to reinstall Thunderbird today. Imported the profile folders without the chrome folder. Now, the Previous button is the only one not working. The Next button is working only partially. It asks me whether I'd like to advance to the next unread message in Inbox. It should just go to the next message.

That's the way these buttons work, they go to the previous/next *unread* message. If there's no unread message the previous button does nothing.

I see. Nevertheless, it's inconsistent. The Previous button does nothing, but the Next button asks whether I want to go to the next unread message. Thanks for the clarification, though.
Dupe of of bug 235666 ?
I also find this most frustrating. In other mail readers, I use previous/next to move backwards and forwards between messages, regardless of whether they are read or unread. Can I request that next/previous message buttons be provided as well as (or instead of) the current ones.

The previous unread message button works that way. But it would be more useful to have a button that would take u to the previous message. Please reply if there is any such hope.
This is still a problem under linux with Thunderbird 1.0.2. This problem should be of normal severity instead of minor.

I'm no UI person but I thought this was busted when I tried to use it. All my messages were read and I wanted to use prev/next to cycle through them. My idea being that I could have the message list pane w/o the preview pane and have the view window to read the messages. This is good for a small screen laptop where you don't have a lot of screen real estate. Clicking the buttons did nothing which made me search for the bug. My vote would be to let them work to view any message. Running on Mac OS X (iBook 12"), Thunderbird 1.0.6

For me, the [Next] button works as expected (just like the "N" key) but the [Previous] button doesn't work at all, nor does the "P" key. Thunderbird version 1.5.0.2 (20060308)

The "next" button works; the "previous" button does not.

Does this still reproduce?
Component: Mail Window Front End → Message Reader UI

Just to be sure, this is talking about the "Next"/"Previous" buttons, not about "Back"/"Forward" ? If I add those, then I can kinda see this problem: Starting at the first unread message, using Next works fine (advances next and reads the message). But using Previous moves to the first message in the folder (even when it is already read). Pressing Previous again has no effect, even when there are unread messages in the folder (and Next would move to them). The shortcuts "P" and "N" behave this same way. That is probably comment 9. Maybe it is intentional? The tooltips on those buttons specifically say that that move among the Unread messages, so there should be no confusion today.

(In reply to :aceman from comment #12) > Just to be sure, this is talking about the "Next"/"Previous" buttons, not > about "Back"/"Forward" ? yes do you read this as a dupe of bug 235666? my 30sec skim reads the same.
