Why should the user care about compacting folders. The application ought to
manage this quietly under the hood without the need to pollute menus and pop-ups
with "Compact This Folder" options.
I disagree. Mozilla *can* do this quietly, but what if the user wants to compact
folders at a specific time? He would have no choice but wait until Mozilla did
it automatically.
Why would you want to do this at a particular time? If mozilla automatically
managed this and compacted reliably and regularly, there should never be a need
to do it manually.
When I am doing some cleanup in my mailboxes (once a week), using compacting
option is useful.

-> WONTFIX ?
I was thinking of something like Frederic said. I also vote for wontfix.
make that 3 for wontfix
I use IMAP and I have choose to "mark the message as deleted" instead of just
removing it or moving to the trash, so I can "delete" the message, and when I'm
done with the cleaning of the mailbox I compact the folder.
Without the ability to manually compact folders the option to mark a message as
deleted would be useless.
so another vote for WONTFIX
Alfonso, this sounds like exactly the sort of thing an automatic system can deal
with. When you mark the message, a flag gets set that indicates that the folder
is a candidate for compaction. So, you continue to "mark the message as deleted"
but no longer need to manually specify the second step. The software becomes
more intellient and automatically schedules that step for you.
I disagree, as I said I want to specify if the messages can be really deleted or
not, maybe I left a bunch of messages marked as deleted for some days and I
wouldn't like that suddendly Mozilla thinks that it should clean up my inbox. If
I wanted Mozilla to automatically compact the folder I wouldn't be using it with
"mark as deleted", I don't think that anyone using mail with this option would
expect Mozilla to compact the folder, or if I want to clean up at any moment I
wouldn't like to have to wait for Mozilla to decide when it is the next compact
scheduled.

It really doesn't hurt to leave that option there, and too many people would be
anoyed if it is removed. I'm all for improving the autocompaction of folders,
and maybe in the future the menu isn't needed at all, but meanwhile leave it as
it is right now.
That's four WONTFIX, who's the one to decide the fate of this bug?
Wontfixes are up to the component owner?
Depends on: 205756
See Bug 139215 and Bug 101584. IMHO this should be WONTFIX.
Resolving as WontFix based on the previous comments.

Those are bugs, they should be fixed. Just because our implementation of
compaction causes problems doesn't mean we should foist the problem on the user.

But that's up to the seamonkey owners. I'm just commenting here to alert David
Brittain that his suggestion has resurfaced as Thunderbird bug 286888

From: http://www.mozilla.org/quality/help/bugzilla-privilege-guide.html

"Bugs should not be marked WONTFIX by the normal bug triager. The decision to
mark a bug WONTFIX is reserved for module owners or module peers."

Forgive me if I'm wrong if failing to find Alfonso to be a member of the above.

I'm going to mark this wontfix - that doesn't mean we won't try to make it
happen in the background, but we're not going to remove the ui for doing it
explicitly.

David, there's an equivalent bug for Thunderbird - Bug 286888. You might want to
wontfix that one as well (would be the right thing IMHO).

Prog.
David, please see the previous comment.

Thanks,

Prog.
Actually, I would like to make local folder compaction happen automatically, or
at least have an option for it.
Automatic compaction may be effective, but removing the UI for doing it manually
is not such a good idea. Do you think it make sense to remove it from TB and
keep it in Mail&News? In this regards, I don't see any conceptual difference
between the two clients.

Prog.
as I said in #c14, we're not going to remove the ui for compacting folders
explicitly.
So I understood correctly. That's why I suggested to also wontfix the equivalent
bug for Thunderbird (Bug 286888).
