User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.4.1) Gecko/20031008
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.4.1) Gecko/20031008

Click on any Hot Topic under Cox Customer Center and you get a page stating that
only Internet Explorer version 5.5 or greater is supported.

Tech Support says that they only support Internet Explorer and that is the only
browser application that can view the pages.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Click on URL supplied
2.
3.

Actual Results:
Got error page stating that only Internet Explorer is supported.

Expected Results:
Display the pages

I received the following reply from Cox Tech Support:

The reason for this is because we do not expect customers to purchase
additional software such as Netscape in order to browse the Internet.
Internet Explorer comes free with Windows, which is why the site is
viewable only with Internet Explorer.
Spoofed the UA to IE 6.0 and the intended page rendered in an I-Frame as
text/plain displayed as raw html code. Server mime-type is configured as
text/plain instead of text/html.

I got in, no spoofed UA.
I see this problem frequently, and I am also a cox customer.

Robert, the main page is accessible, but try the Hot Topics.

Lee Jones
Yep, see it there.

Robert: Try this link under Hot Topics
http://usercenter.cox.net/rsuite/sdcuser/asp/showContent.jsp?sublevel=yes&frameurl=/custsup/safety/aug_worm.shtml

This problem is not confined to the New Orleans pages as this seems to happen
throughout the entire Cox network.
Jay, that is correct, the same happen on the Cox-New England pages.

Bug#: 229140 is an accidental dupe of this bug, looks like a double post.

I get the same result, denied using:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.5) Gecko/20031007 Firebird/0.7

Incorrect MIME type specified for <iframe> when spoofing UserAgent.

I will contact them and post their reply. Their arguements for supporting IE
only are weak, and as far as I can tell, supporting other browsers would require
minimum effort.
The offending URL to me is http://members.cox.net/

I've made complaints abouot this, (to Cox, on IRC, and in the MozillaZine forums)

It's absolutely ridiculous. You are alienating an entire customer base, and I
see no reason why they even went to the effort to do this.
Looks like they are letting non-IE web browsers in

This bug is NOT fixed or resolved. When accessing the URL in comment #5 the
support page comes up now but NOT the intended page according to the link.

My mistake, I checked a few links under "Service and Support" and "Contact Us"
You seem to be right, check out that page in a non-IE browser and you can still
seea message on the page:

"Support.Cox.net has been redesigned to provide advanced support options for
Windows 98, NT, ME, 2000 and XP with Internet Explorer 5.5 and above. To take
advantage of the additional support features of this site, please use one of
these supported operating systems and browsers."
I also reported this in bug 226968.

The site has allowed me to get in at certain times but not most of the time,
just as described in this thread.

::shakes head:: You'd think a major ISP would know better than this!
