If I'm running XMMS and I start playing flash games with sound, then later close the window with the flash, esd still takes up large amounts of processor time. Generally, the longer I play games the more CPU it takes up (I've had it up to 50% of my P4 2.00 GHz), but my suspicion is that it's not just time or number of sounds played, but number of /different/ sounds played, since playing the same game for long periods only brings it to around 3%. If Mozilla or XMMS is quit completely, the problem goes away. bug 58339 was about mozilla hanging when loading flash, looks related. I'm a relative newbie at linux, but I can do any sort of testing needed as long as I'm told pretty much exactly what to do. (RH9)
I said before that if XMMS was quit, the problem went away, but that's not quite true. If XMMS is quit, the cpu usage goes back down to normal; however, if it's started back up, the problem returns. If Mozilla, though, is quit and restarted, the problem really /is/ gone.
