This is comfusing on first read, but stick with me. :o) For example, if I compose the following message as a reply and place my signature right under my reply but above the quoted text (rather than leaving it at the bottom of the page) like in this example: In this message I will insert my signature on top below reply but above previous quoted replies. -Dave -- Dave Ellis http://www.idt.com Product Support Specialist phone: 613-724-6004 Dave Ellis wrote on 01/09/2004 03:17 PM -0500 (EST): > > This is another reply quoting the first two messages. > -Dave > > > Dave Ellis wrote on 01/09/2004 03:17 PM -0500 (EST): >> >> This is the second reply quoting the first message. >> -Dave >> >> >> Dave Ellis wrote on 01/09/2004 03:16 PM -0500 (EST): >>> >>> >>> This is a test. >>> -Dave >>> >> > I receive the email back to myself fine. Now if I reply to this email, the message I get back in my inbox is missing all but the last reply as in the following: And now as expected, all but the last of the previously quoted replies disappear. -Dave Dave Ellis wrote on 01/09/2004 03:18 PM -0500 (EST): > > In this message I will insert my signature on top below > reply but above previous quoted replies. > -Dave > This is a problem as in our corporate environment we are encouraged to keep the complete quoted message thread intact in each email sent. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Send an email to yourself. 2.Reply to the first email. 3.Reply to the second email. 4.Reply to the third email, but this time place your signature below your repsonse but above the previously quoted messages. Note that it doesn't really matter how many quotes you have first, I just add a few to make it obvious that quoted messages are being left out. Actual Results: As described in the Details section. I used these steps to generate the examples I provided. Expected Results: It should have kept the previously quoted messages in the reply regardless of the positioning of the signature within the page. And for extra bonus points, would also remove the signature upon replying once more when it became redundent. This bug / behaviour will make it harder to keep using Mozilla in our medium sized corporate environment, and requires laborious cutting and pasting and then typing in extra ">" marks to work around.
Oops, I left out the final step to reproduce this. They should read as: Steps to Reproduce: 1.Send an email to yourself. 2.Reply to the first email. 3.Reply to the second email. 4.Reply to the third email, but this time place your signature below your repsonse but above the previously quoted messages. 5.Reply to the fourth email. Thanks, -Dave

I refer you to the long-suffering bug 62429, the fix for which is in place in 1.6b and 1.7a-nightly builds. See in particular bug 62429 comment 283 et seq. The behavior you see is as designed and is very unlikely to be changed; therefore, this bug is invalid. Presumably, you are manually pasting your sig into that location. The more recent versions of the program provide an additional option to automatically insert the sig between the reply text (at the top) and the quoted text (at the end). When this is done, the separation line for the signature is removed, to prevent this stripping from occurring. Of course, this means the sig itself is not going to be stripped out either.

I'm sorry to see this bug declared invalid. I am having this problem with mail sent to me by others. They are including quoted text below their signature. When I use Mozilla to reply, the quoted text below the signature is gone. My only workaround is to use Forward instead of Reply.
A similar bug (bug 216678) has been filed against Thunderbird. It would be nice if this could be fixed in both Mozilla and Thunderbird.
