From time to time, palm sync will create duplicate categories on the palm. I
believe this happens when palm sync creates a new mozilla AB, and then the next
time we sync, we think the mozilla AB has not been synced ever, so it must be
new, and so we must create a new category on the palm. I have a fix that
prevents us from creating duplicate categories on the palm. Patch upcoming.

while that previous patch worked beautifully if the ab you're looking for
happened to be the first category, it didn't work so well if it wasn't.

This wouldn't by any chance have any relation to the bug resulting in duplicate
cards would it?

(more hoping than anything else).
if the duplicate cards are in different categories, then yes, it could be related.
