User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.5b) Gecko/20030827 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.5b) Gecko/20030827 When I select the file c:\NTDETECT.COM, I get a message box headed "Opening NTDETECT.COM.gif," and it says, "The file 'NTDETECT.COM.gif' is of type application/octet-stream (GIF Image), and Mozilla does not know how to handle this file type." This is true of other types of file for which there is no plug-in as well. Actual gif files are handled OK. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Select menu File/Open File.../ 2. Select a file with an extension Mozilla won't recognize (you can rename a file). Select a file that is NOT a GIF file. The file may be on the WWW or on your disk. I picked NTDETECT.COM because it should be on most people's hard drive and easy to find. I DON'T ACTUALLY WANT TO OPEN NTDETECT.COM WITH THE BROWSER -- I'm only using it as an example so you can see what happens. 3. Note that .gif extension has been added, and if "Save to disk" is selected, it will be saved with the .gif extension, even though it is not a GIF file. Actual Results: Actual Results: Message box as described. Note that the extension .gif has been added to the file, even though the file is not a GIF file. Expected Results: Expected Results: Should have tried to open the file as actual type, which is .com? At least it should report the correct type of file, and offer to save it under its actual name (NTDETECT.COM) rather than as NTDETECT.COM.gif. This may be related to an earlier bug (I think it is fixed in 1.5b) where any downloaded file of an unknown type would be saved as a gif image.
See Bug #218227 for additional comments.
could you please upgrade Mozilla to 1.6 and create a new profile?
Do you have a mapping from application/octet-stream to .gif in your preferences?
Reporter, no one can reproduce this bug as described. If you can't provide steps to reproduce this bug in a recent version of Mozilla with a new profile, or give us any clue to what might be causing the problem, this is going to be marked WFM.
This bug is fixed in V1.6. Thanks.
