This is WorksForMe in WinME, using ThunderBird 0.5a 20040128.

A clean install of a more recent ThunderBird version might do the trick. New
versions are released around once a week at
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/nightly/?C=N;O=D .

If you can repeat this in a recent build of the traditional Mail/News product,
this may instead be a problem on the main trunk and not just in ThunderBird.
