User-Agent: Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.7a) Gecko/20040125 The description property of the top-level ("root") Bookmark folder (named "Bookmarks for <profile_name>" in Mozilla, and just "Bookmarks" in Mozilla Firebird) isn't being saved. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Display the Bookmark Manager window (using Bookmarks | Manage Bookmarks). 2. Select the top-level bookmark folder, i.e. the very first entry in the list, and then choose Edit | Properties (or click the Properties toolbar button). 3. In the dialog box that appears, enter some text in the Description text field, then click OK. 4. Exit Mozilla, then restart it and open the Bookmark Manager window again. Observe the Description property of the top-level bookmark folder. Actual Results: The Description property of the top-level bookmark folder is gone. No descriptive text is visible. Expected Results: The Description property of the top-level bookmark folder should contain the text entered in step 3 above.

confirming on Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.7a) Gecko/20040129 I created description properties for the root folder and my personal toolbar folder, closed the bookmarks manager, reopened, and they were still seen. Closed Mozilla, reopened Mozilla, BookmarksManager, and the description was lost from the Root folder, but ok (saved) on the Personal Toolbar folder.

I was aware of this problem. The bookmarks parser and serializer need some important refactoring to handle the root bookmarks as a normal bookmarks folder.

Behavior also observed for Windows 2000 This behavior (failure to retain changes to Bookmark Properties or Properties for Bookmarks "Name=Bookmarks" - i.e. the top level bookmark - was also noted (present) in Version 1.6 and I suspect can be tracked to prior versions also.

Product: Browser → Seamonkey
Confirming for SM 2.0 on Linux and Win. Next minor version probably will use a bookmarks database instead of a file and having this bug fixed by that.
OS: Windows 98 → All
With moving to Places there are no more description for root toolbar folder thus this report become obsolete, so closing
