Details
Just that: browsing an FTP site only shows (say 12) subdirectories, whereas there are actually many more (say 30)

Sounds more like a layout or ftp problem. What makes you suspect views?

adding comments from NeilB e-mail: BTW, I think the component is marked wrong, this is probably XPApps bug. My apologies, it appears I have mis-diagnosed this bug. It is not FTP, but file browsing using file:///. Browsing my local Linux filesystem does not show all subdirectories for some locations. This does not appear to be related to directory size: some directories (/usr/share) with far more subdirectories show perfectly. However, the problematic ones are deeper; maybe this is the cause? In fact, file:///usr/X11R6/lib/X11 does not work fully for my system; only 9 of the 13 subdirectories are shown. I can see no reason why the others are not shown - it's not file permissions or ownership. I hope you can reproduce this now - let me know!

Since some files are displayed and other are not, this sounds like it may be a problem with the file protocol handler. Changing component - reassigning to warren.

nsDirectoryIndexStream::Read doesn't return "hidden" files (nsIFile::IsHidden). Could this be the issue? Changing summary from "When viewing an File URL's in the main browser, not all files are shown" to "not all files shown in directory viewer"

See bug # 29439 for details on why "hidden" files/directories should not be shown.
