I have two news server accounts: netnews.comcast.net and news.groupstudy.com. I
can read and post to newsgroups on the Comcast server, but I cannot post to
newsgroups on the GroupStudy server.
I manually added the news.groupstudy.com account. I then successfully subscribed
to the two newsgroups that I'm interested in, and I could download and read
messages. When I try to post, it appears to work from the client's
perspective--I get no errors at all. However, the post never shows up on the
news list.
I'm a moderator of those groups and I've also tried sending test messages that I
know will get stuck in the moderator's queue so I've verified that they truly
are not showing up.
I deleted and recreated the news.groupstudy.com account and I see the same
behavior. I know that GroupStudy uses the INN server software but I don't recall
the platform.
The presence of this issue is the only problem keeping me from migrating
completely away from Outlook Express.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create a news account for news.groupstudy.com
2. Subscribe to a group
3. Try to post
Actual Results:
Posting appears to succeed with no errors but posts do not show up on the list.
Expected Results:
Successful newsgroup post

I forgot to mention that this occurs in both Thunderbird 0.4 and 0.5b.

So you're saying posting a message to news.groupstudy.com with OE works?
I just tested posting a message to groupstudy.associate via this server and
monitored with Ethereal. The server correctly answered with "240 Article posted".
If this message doesn't show up there it's very strange.
In this case a communications log for the OE session could be helpful.

John, I got an automatic response from the groupstudy server to confirm my
sender address. So I it looks everything went right and my post reached the server.
I'm using Mozilla 1.7a 20040206.

I think I'll install Ethereal and see if I can spot the problem. It's most
likely an issue with the installation on my computer. I'll post more details as
soon as I get them.

I got a capture from Ethereal and I do indeed get a 240 response from the
server. So, I tried it again in OE for comparison and now my posts from OE are
also not making it to the server! So, something must have happened on the server
that is stopping me from posting and it occurred coincidently with my move to
TB. Since this is obviously not a bug in TB we should dump this bug report.
Thanks!

Just an quick note to explain what the problem was. The answer was in your first
response. I had setup the account to use a fake email address to cut down on
spam, but that stopped me from receiving the confirmation email. Without a valid
response to the confirmation, the server just drops the post entirely. You'd
think as a list moderator I would have figured that one out. :-)
Thanks again!
