User-Agent: Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.6) Gecko/20040113 If you wish to install to a directory other than the default (c:\program files\Mozilla Firefox), you cannot enter this directly into the edit box on the "Browse for Folder" dialog. If you do, the "OK" button remains disabled. You must instead browse through the directory tree to the location where you wish to install. This has the effect of requiring any directory other than the default install directory to already exist. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Run the Firefox installer. 2. Click "Next" to get through the initial dialog and the license agreement. 3. Select "Custom" at the Setup Type screen, then click "Next". 4. At the Install Folder screen, click "Browse". The Browse for Folder dialog will appear. 5. Enter something in the dialog box. Actual Results: The "OK" button remained disabled even after the directory where I wanted to install Firefox had been entered. Expected Results: The "OK" button should be enabled.

Does the directory already exist when you do this? If not, this is a dupe of bug 229343.

It doesn't seem to matter if the directory already exists or not, though it's obviously more of a problem if the directory doesn't exist and you want the installer to create it.

And there is no "create new directory" button at the least. Other installers allow the directory to be entered manually. I frequently change the drive letter from C to E while keeping the rest (Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird).

The same thing is wrong with the Thunderbird install so I submitted another bug. http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=245068

This bug still exists in Firefox 1.0PR (Windows 98). A custom directory has to be created in Explorer first. Very annoying.

Nominating for 1.1. Please note that it's one of (many) causes of installing to "d:\program files\" - usually, changing drive from "c" to "d" is one backspace and one "d" button, but because of that bug, this is not possible.

Update using Firefox Setup 1.0.1.exe: OK button is not disabled. But instead of working correctly, the path is garbaged. I can confirm a workaround: create the target folder manually (md "D:\Program Files\Firefox"). Then browse to that folder with mouse from the Browse dialog. If you do that, then Firefox can be installed to another drive. Bug 286364 (marked as dupe) has a screen capture of the garbage.

I have the same problem everytime I install Firefox on Windows XP (german version), so it is not only Windows 98, but every other Windows versions too. Everytime I install Firefox I become nearly insane about this idiotic installation tool!!!!! Last time it was a few days ago when I installed Firefox version "1.0.4": I completely removed the old Firefox version from the machine. Then, I called the Firefox installer. I selected "Custom" at the Setup Type screen and clicked "Next". The installer told me that it will install Firefox into the directory "C:\Programme\Mozilla Firefox". But, I do not want any space character in my file systems, so everytime I install any softwary, I replace the " " by a "_". My intention was to install Firefox into the directory "C:\Programme\Mozilla_Firefox". I looked for an opportunity to replace the " " by a "_", but there is no chance to change the suggested destination path. That was annoying. In my frustration, I clicked the button which suggested me to create a new directory. I got a file browsing menu. The default value in this file browsing menu was a very stupid and idiotic place on my hard disk which has absolutly no relation to my intention to install a software onto my system. This was more annoying. In my frustration, I browsed to "C:\Programme". Then, I tried to create the directory "Mozilla_Firefox" within this place ("C:\Programme"). The installer just created a directory named "Mozilla_Firefox", but this new directory was not within "C:\Programme". It was created within this very stupid and idiotic place on my hard disk which was presented to me as I opened this weird file browsing menu!!! At this point I was in rage! I had to pull myself together. I was on the verge of grabbing this computer and throwing it through the window and then running through the hall screaming and yelling. I decided to pull myself together... The worst problem: This situation repeats everytime I install a Firefox. And every Firefox with an again increased version number has this very annoying bug! The version is now above 1.00! Please, finally fix this bug before I cannot pull myself together anymore! A software with such an idiotic bug is just embarrassing... ciao Michael

Any specific reason for removing Bugzilla Bug 233625 from dependency list? If only because it is marked "fixed" (though maybe not completely), then 282239 should also go, right? Not sure, but I believe this is important to leave in. Thanks.

Wait, it's not a dup of 229343 - quite contrary, 229343 depends on this bug. This bug is about entering install path with keyboard. 229343 is a win95/nt4 limitation.

not a 229343 dupe, still not resolved in Firefox 1.5 Once again: adding a textfield (like many other installers) would make it possible for the user to simply enter the desired installation directory. If it does not exist, let the installer create it. Please reopen it (and this is not only win98-specific, s.a.)
