reproduced on Windows NT found workaround at http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=105350&highlight=age
please change status to confirmed "age in days" works when searching for messages ("right-click" on imap folder, then select "search", option "age in days" appears)
So the functionality has been there all along, but the UI has been missing? Great. OK, it's not the biggest problem in the world to move your old mail once every other month, but..
