Currently the DM opens in a new window and is not in the background(although I
understand doing this would be difficult). Opening it in a tab in the background
would be a nice solution, and could also solve the problem of bug 234396.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start a download.
Actual Results:
The download manager window opens.
Expected Results:
The window should have opened in the background or in a tab(whichever; both
would be bloat).

I would prefer the DM be able to Dock in the Sidebar like history & bookmarks it
should provide simple/fast '--progress=TYPE' stats on download like 'wget'
http://wget.techknight.com/index.php
# wget -c -nH -nd -r -np
ftp://pub/fedora/linux/core/1/i386/iso/yarrow-i386-disc1.iso
458850K .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... 72% 147.93 KB/s
458850K ===============================> 72% 147.93 KB/s
Icons & Fonts too large in DM for my tastes, wget displays ascii text for
progress which is very lightweight & informative.

you can already open it in the background
Options>Downloads>Show Download Manager window when download begins
the tab thing can cause dataloss
so this is invalid
Pham, the window opens on *top* of the current window for me. I don't see how
opening it in a tab would be data loss, though. In the current tab, yes, but in
a new tab, no.

I suppose this bug could be reopened, the possibility of data loss is not given anymore since newer versions of Firefox ask you what what to do if you quit with multiple tabs opened.
Arguing in favor of this bug, having the download manager open in a window each time can be quite annoying if you are used to working with tabs only.

I agree.
Firefox download manager should exist in a tab and not in a separate window.
It will be much more convenient.
