User-Agent: Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-GB; rv:1.6) Gecko/20040113 MultiZilla/1.6.0.1e The PowerGen website denies Mozilla with the error message: "We have detected that you are running a browser not supported by this website. We currently support Microsoft Internet Explorer (Version 5.0 or above) and Netscape Navigator (Version 7.02 or above). Whilst not officially supported the site can also be used with Opera (Version 7.20 or above) and Konqueror (Version 3.1.1 or above). Your Current Browser: Netscape Your Current Version: 1.6.0.1e It is recommended that you upgrade your browser to one of the below." Spoofing my user agent string to Netscape 7 gives me acces to the site without any further difficulties. I have contacted them at http://www.powergen.co.uk/index.asp?PgId=LsNhw1y%2BXJOPkccUl8liy0D8PI4%3D (with UA spoofing enabled) several times but with no success. This is a simple broken browser detection script -- they are redirecting if navigator.appName is 'Netscape' and the version pulled from the UA string is < 7 Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Visit the URL above Actual Results: Error message and denied access Expected Results: Access to site content

That will teach me for checking if the site has been reported, then not checking again the next day when I actually file the bug... As recorded in my Bug 234901, I would echo Raj's comments that complaining yields little joy; I was effectively fobbed off with a response about how they judge IE 6 and Netscape 7 to be the two most common and reliable browsers.

I have not ben able to reproduce the problem with Mozilla 1.7. Has the problem been fixed? Should this bug be closed?

Page has not been changed. Firefox 0.9.1 still produces the same result. Why it seems to let Mozilla 1.7 through for you I cannot explain. Anyone else with the same result?

I'm using Mozilla 1.7 final on WinXP and I still get the same error.

Hmm, since the page was telling me that my browser version was "1.6.4.0b", I removed the general.useragent.vendorSub pref that was set to that (by the Multizilla extension) and after that the PowerGen site worked (at least the front page, I didn't go any further). They've got some really broken browser detection going on there. I think that this bug should be kept open until they've fixed that.

It doesn't work with FireFox 0.9.2 either (as of Sat 24/07/2004) - the same problem of getting stone-walled by the browser detection and dumped on the "sorry we don't support your browser" page. This caused grief during a power cut :( Firefox actually got recognised as Netscape, so it said "sorry we don't support Netscape 0.9.2" or similar! I got a response today, with powergen customer-service case 1832272. Hopefully this will get further than when I opened case 1538530 in January (when I needed to create a login to do something, and found that their website refused the browser). As for many people, Internet Explorer isn't really a suitable option for me (outside of emergencies) as I am either not using Windows, or don't want to subject the PC to the insecurities of IE. I am intending to point the powergen people at this page, so they are more aware I'm not alone.

This is still a problem with Firefox 1.0, and other Mozilla-based products with particular version numbers. Bizarrely nightly builds of the suite work fine, because it picks up their build ID and these are comfortably >= 7. As there's been no movement I've sent them another query, see below. You'll have to forgive me the description of Camino's code base, but 1024 characters isn't very many! Note that Safari also works in this site; it gets identified as Netscape, but Apple have (cunningly!) used a version numbers from about 80 onwards, also >= 7. text of query: Along with many people I no longer use IE. I was surprised to find that I cannot access your site using Camino, an open source browser based on the same code as Netscape 7 (which you support). The script you use to detect browsers is broken. You ban many (but not all) Mozilla-based browsers, including the popular Firefox browser (1.0). Your site works in these browsers, so you are needlessly excluding potential customers. I hope to consider your services using my preferred browser, but I am currently unable to do so. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=234836 Cheers, -Bruce

I can also now access the site normally using Firefox 1.0.4 (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.8) Gecko/20050511 Firefox/1.0.4) Examining the source for the page seems to show that the offending browser detection script has been removed.

It looks like the initial/main problem is resolved, but attempting to login to the site ("Your Account") as my residential user yields a 404 error. This is the case in both Firefox-1.0.4/W32 and IE6/W32. I have notified them and we'll see. It appears they have listened (perhaps noticed the browser market share since Firefox-1.0 :) Good on everyone for prodding them!
