23503 - Get new messages sometime downloads entire mailbox from POP server

Every so often, Get Msg will download all messages from my POP server instead of
just new messages, resulting in duplicate messages in the local folder.
  It happens most often when the content of the server mailbox changes by
downloading and deleting messages from the server through another client.

Instructions wich will reproduce the bug in my setup almost every time:
1. Have the same POP account set up on two different accounts or computers. Both
accounts are set to delete messages from server when cleaned from trash locally.
2. On computer 1 do the following:
a. Send a message to self
b. Get new messages
c. Delete the message just sent to yourself
d. Empty Trash
3. On computer 2, running Mozilla, get messages

Actual result: All messages on server are downloaded as unread messages
Expected result: Only messages not previously downloaded to computer 2
are downloaded.

Is it possible that one computer has the "leave mail on server" pref, and one
does not? We did recently change the default setting so that we download all the
messages. Of course, you can set it back if you want.

Reassigning to jefft in case there's a real bug here.

I use Mozilla on one machine and NS4.7 on another.  Both are set up to "leave
mail on server" and "delete from server when deleted locally".  Only Mozilla
displays the errant behavior.

I know there's a feature bug filed for not ever allowing duplicate messages in a
mailbox.  But just for the case where you want to make sure you're not
downlaoding a message twice, can't you keep the UIDL info and only download
messages where the UIDL isn't already in the local mailbox?

When you say you changed the default setting so that you download all the
messages, what do you mean? I don't see any such pref in the account setup
dialog.  I do remember, however, that Eudora has a pref where you can choose if
you want to download all messages that are marked unread on the server, or those
that you haven't downloaded yet (read or unread).

Using builds dated 20000106 on linux and 20000106 on win98, 4.7 on Win95 and the
same POP account launched on all three I get duplicate mail messages with the 2
systems running 5.0, but no duplicates on the 4.7 system when I do the
following:

1. All three products have the same preferences set: to "leave
mail on server" and "delete from server when deleted locally".
2. With this POP account opened on all three,
 a.) I send from 4.7, read the message then Delete it.  Result: Both 5.0
systems still gets the message and duplicates of other messages that were
retrieved during this session.
 b.) I send from win98 5.0, read the message then Delete it.  Result: Both
linux 5.0 and win98 4.7 systems still get the message but only 5.0 get's more
duplicates of previously retrieved messages.  4.7 does not bring in duplicates.

I need to test this more with mac, linux and win98 platforms, but basically POP
accounts will get messages that have already been retrieved resulting in
duplicates in certain cases.  With the build dates mentioned above, I am having
other problems that makes this particular testing slow.   I will update this bug
with specific results when I get better builds.

Seems to work on Linux build 2000.01.19.08.  Verifying. esther, can you check
this as well just to make sure?
