User-Agent:
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.7a) Gecko/20040218

The math symbol − should be as long as the symbol +.
(I think I can quote official math type-setters if you would like.)
Mozilla gets: <http://cap-lore.com/dash/moz.tiff>
Safari gets it right with <http://cap-lore.com/dash/saf.tiff>
Mozilla's – makes a fine minus but the utf8 version doesn't work
and besides it seems to be nolonger official.

MSIE is wrong too.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
Go to <http://cap-lore.com/dash/dashes.html> and compare rendering of −
(between c and d) with that of + (between x and c).
Actual Results:
See <http://cap-lore.com/dash/moz.tiff>.

Expected Results:
See <http://cap-lore.com/dash/saf.tiff>

Ancilliary factoid:
utf8 version of – fails.
This made me discover problem with −
This may dup or be dependent in some way on bug 232931.
Agreed. By the way, – is the wrong code point in UTF-8, try – instead.
