User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7b) Gecko/20040305 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7b) Gecko/20040305 This problem ocures on Mozilla 1.7a and 1.7b on Linux. It does not occure on Mozilla 1.4 on Linux on my other machine. Umlaut characters are displayed wrong in headlines. I.e. instead of "ä" a "ð" is displayed. The document specifies the charset via HTTP header as iso-8859-1. The code sent to the client is pure ascii, using entities for all non ascii characters. Page info says "ISO-8859-1" as encoding. This is what the validator says. The document located at <http://gml-modul.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/gmL?Sprache=de&domain=dhtml-tutorial&webpage=dokumentstruktur> was checked and found to be valid HTML 4.01 Transitional. This means that the resource in question identified itself as “HTML 4.01 Transitional” and that we successfully performed a formal validation using an SGML or XML Parser (depending on the markup language used). The validator won't accept a page as valid, if there is no valid character set spezified. If you call the page and scroll down to the last head line "häufige Fehler" you see "hðufige Fehler" or something else that looks like a lowercase delta character instead of an "ä". This is the related markup: <h2>h&auml;ufige Fehler</h2> This should result in "häufige Fehler" but is displayed as "hðufige Fehler" in Mozilla 1.7. Opera and Konqueror on the same machine do not display this bug. They display it correctly as "häufige Fehler". The bug only occures with headline tags. Paragraphs are not affected. Mozilla 1.7b Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7b) Gecko/20040305 It looks like character enconding confusion when retrieving the font to display the headline. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: If you look for "häufige Fehler" with the find dialog, it finds and hilites correctly the damaged headline. Actual Results: I see "hðufige Fehler" Expected Results: I should see "häufige Fehler"
I can't reproduce this with 2004030607, WinXP.

I now detected the problem on other authors pages also with other elements than headline elements. May be that it has to do with Helvetica/Arial and bold.
Worksforme too (current Linux mozilla nightly). Sounds to me like you have a buggy font...
Hm, why does it work with Netscape 4, Opera and Konquerer running on the same machine, if the font is buggy? Don't they use the same fonts?
Hm, the problem seems to be a local problem but only affecting mozilla. I now took an old 1.4 release on the same mchine, which also has the problem. On the other machine that old release does not have that problem. Also taking a very anchient 1.0rc2 reproduces the problem. So it seems to be a local problem affecting all Mozillas but only Mozillas. Does Mozilla have it's own fonts? Or why are only Mozilla browsers affected by that problem? If Mozilla has it's own fonts, where are they located? Very curious.
I belive in non xft mozilla(normal builds from mozilla.org) build use fonts from X. You can further have truetype fonts by editing mozilla/defaults/pref/unix.js. In XFT builds it uses /etc/fonts/fonts.conf. WFM LInux 2004033108

There is a file .xftcache in the home directory, which contains a lot of path informations about fonts, but there seems to be no application called xft.
xft is a library rather than a program /usr/X11R6/lib/libXft.so* to get a Mozilla xft build, you'll need to build it yourself, grab a mozilla RPM, or get a build from your distro vendor. the umlaut probably shows up in other places, but not that one because each font size has a different file. the one used for the headings might not include the umlaut. ==> gtk

The font is damaged on that machine. So this is not caused by Mozilla but by the damaged font.
