OK, now that the bug is in the right place, question for you: If you save the attachment somewhere from mailnews instead of opening it, then run Open Office manually and open the document from within Open Office, do you have the same problem still? If so, this bug is invalid for Mozilla, and you need to go file this against OO or KDE. If these symptoms ONLY happen when you open the document from within MailNews, then there MIGHT be something for here....
erm, here are a list of things involved in your report (ordered based on the likelyhood of the problem belonging to a given product, most likely first): fedora - https://bugzilla.redhat.com/ kde - http://bugs.kde.org/ openoffice - http://www.openoffice.org/issues/ mozmail - http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/enter_bug?product=MailNews each of the preceding use a bugzilla or derivative to track bugs. however you filed this bug in the bugzilla.mozilla.org Bugzilla product, whose purpose is to track bugs in the bugzilla bug tracking software. FWIW you should include the version of openoffice in a bug report like this ... wrt testing this w/o mozilla, you should find out what command mozilla is using to open the file. it should be somewhere in edit>preferences you should find helper apps, which should have the association for the type of file mozilla thought your openoffice document was. try using that command from a xterm/konsole. if the problem still happens then unless the command is something that mozilla shouldn't have picked, the problem isn't mozilla's fault. (fwiw this could be a browser:file handling bug, although it's fairly unlikely - test for that is trying to open the file in navigator after saving the attachment to disk.)
