Before I put them on Thunderbird 0.5, they were using Mozilla 1.4, which has an option to automatically compact the folders after a certain amount of dead space was reached. This worked marvelously. Would you please (re)include this feature in Thunderbird. I ask this as I have had customers with two eMails in their inbox and an inbox file size is 334 Meg. Also, I tell them to periodically compact their folders, but they never remember. So, it really does need to be automatic. Many thanks, --Tony Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.
I think that is also would be useful to add option to "compact the folders when thunderbird exits", so thunderbird would compact the folders when you close it. (so the disk space is saved and deleted messages are really deleted from inbox files)
Just Install the official "Offline Support" extension. It brings the auto-compact functionality. After install, go to Options --> Extenstions --> Offline support --> Settings However, at the moment, the extension has one really annoying flaw, see Bug#: 239027 Byli jste varovani :-)

Offline support is now part of the official download, altho it does need to be selected as part of the installation (if I remember rightly, that selection is made automatically).
