In my opinion both button should be part of the core application. I handle a lot of messages and having easy ways to maximize some displays would be really very useful. Why should this be separat toolbar buttons? We already have this possibility to switch both of them. - Preview Pane: Shortcut F8 or "View | Layout | Message Pane" - Searchbar: "View | Toolbars | Searchbar" I don't think that it is neccessary to add new toolbar buttons therefor. I think no-one use these features so often that we need such buttons.
(In reply to comment #1) Thanks for the F8 short-cut, didn't know about that one. > Why should this be separat toolbar buttons? Because it is quite laborious to switch the Search bar on and off and it is extremely handy to have the search bar close at hand, especially because I use both options continuously. A keyboard short-cut will do for me as well, but being able to place those two buttons up there is much more attractive for most users. > I think no-one use these features so often that we need such buttons. Well I do and I use them A LOT.

I don't believe. Additionally these menu entries apply to preferences of Thunderbird only and can't be add to the mail toolbar, because there you can find buttons for message specific functions instead.
Why not let the users choose themselves? Everyone can add and remove buttons as one likes. In any case, a keyboard shortcut to toggle the search pane would be greatly appreciated as well.

This is an automated message, with ID "auto-resolve01". This bug has had no comments for a long time. Statistically, we have found that bug reports that have not been confirmed by a second user after three months are highly unlikely to be the source of a fix to the code. While your input is very important to us, our resources are limited and so we are asking for your help in focussing our efforts. If you can still reproduce this problem in the latest version of the product (see below for how to obtain a copy) or, for feature requests, if it's not present in the latest version and you still believe we should implement it, please visit the URL of this bug (given at the top of this mail) and add a comment to that effect, giving more reproduction information if you have it. Clark, can you give a comment to this bug? I know that you would like to see the UI simplified. So I don't think we should add such a toolbar button.

The thunderbar (bug 452281) is a much simpler toolbar than the current so I can't see having a toggle button for the message pane included by default. However I'm somewhat ambivalent about the button in general, as a part of the toolbar customize dialog.
