Mozilla Firefox shouldn't use:
shouldn't use HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Mozilla\Desktop

it should use:
shouldn't use HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Mozilla Firefox\Desktop

This is also the way Mozilla Thunderbird works
If you take a look at the organization of the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software" key,
you'll see that the prevailing method is to organize by publisher (e.g.,
"Microsoft" or "Apple Computer, Inc.") rather than software title.  You'll have
to make a very compelling argument to break that standard.
