When a jpg attachment is displayed inline under MailNews, you can right click
on the image and get the mini-menu containing "Save Image As". When this
is selected, a directory is navigated to, and the save button hit, all that
is getting created is a "stub" file between 1 and 2 KB in size with none of
the actual data downloaded.

This is occurring whether I am having Download Manager or a Progress Dialog
open at download.

You can still successfully download the attachment by right clicking in
the "attached file" window to the right of the "Subject" (etc) and choosing
"Save As", but this entails another full download of the image.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Go to any binary pictures group, e.g., alt.binaries.pictures.orchids
2. Select any message and wait until picture displays in MailNews window
3. Right click on picture
4. Choose "Save Image As"
5. Navigate to whatever directory you wish and hit "Save" in the dialog.
6. Open the directory in Windows Explorer, with "Thumbnails" chosen, and you
will not have the picture. Alternatively, you can double click on the
file to try to open it in your photo editing program. The open fails
usually noting "cannot determine file type"

Actual Results:
No thumbnails are produced and the .jpg file is unopenable

Expected Results:
Saved the .jpg attachment
looks like Bug 238417, but the size of the file should be bigger.
Could you please take a look at the saved files with notepad?

It appears to be closely related. I can, and do, re-create this
error with *every* attempt to save via the method I noted.
Below is the text contained in one of the "saved image" files:

i find now with Moz-1.7b gecko 20040316 W98SE when using the newsgroups reader
that if i try to save an image from a newgroup message using the context menu
(right click)
it saves a file, but a corrupt one. on rare occasion nothing saves, but most of
the time
a corrput file gets saved instead. if i use file/attachments/save-as, then it
saves the file ok.
also, UNLIKE moz-1.4.1, when i save an image, the download manager does NOT
pop up (even when i tell it to use the download manager). the download manager
now only pops up
for saving images from web pages using browser, but NOT from newsgroups reader;
it used to pop up with either when i used moz-1.4.1 instead.
this seems to be new for 1.7b (compared to 1.4.1) on win-98se

Bug 238417 has a report that this occurs for emails from Outlook Express, and
the problem takes place on images embedded within an HTML message (as opposed to
regular attachments). Does this correspond with the problem reported here?

A sample message exhibiting the problem is requested. Unless something comes up
here to seriously differentiate it from that bug, this one will be marked as a
duplicate, so if the email matches that description, please attach it to 238417.

this happens when you view a file from USENET NEWSGROUPS. i do not see how this
could happen due to some outlook express messages. it affects newsgroups just as
badly as e-mails!

Outlook Express can post to newsgroups too.

Still: when you locate a message where this occurs, save it as a .EML file and
attach the file to this bug, or to bug 238417.

This bug has had no comments for a long time. Statistically, we have found that
bug reports that have not been confirmed by a second user after three months are
highly unlikely to be the source of a fix to the code.
