Since version 1.6, I have been unable to get sound in flash working. This is
possibly a Debian specific problem. With the Debian Mozilla and Firefox
packages, sound does not work in flash with either the Debian flash package or
installing it by hand.

Actual Results:

Sean, could you possibly check with a Mozilla.org build?

I tried the GTK firefox 0.8 build from mozilla.org. Same issue. flash plays, but
no audio. I only tried flash 6.0.81
I'm having the same problem on the win32 build and the latest flash plugin

Issue was reported to me by an IT admin that I know. Flash version 6.0 r79
Firefox version 0.8 Gecko/20040207 RH9
Although the issues might be different in different cases, I'm confirming

Btw, by RH9, That means Redhat 9 Linux.
He installed the mplayer plugin and there was also no sound for that. I also had
him try different versions of Firefox and test it on Mozilla 1.4.2, same deal,
so its probably not a regression, or at least not a recent one.
Normal applications like stand-alone mplayer have sound.
Since this was mentioned on Windows, and as of yet, we have no way to tell if
its the same issue, I'm changing OS to ALL. If it appears to be different
issues, we can break off this bug.
Switching severity to Major because this is a major loss of function for those
involved.

BTW, can anyone else on Linux who saw this issue try the mplayer plugin? Through
apt-get, its mplayerplug-in, and otherwise you can get it by following the
directions at http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/
On Win32, try some other plugins, and see if you still get no sound.

Sorry, here is a link you can try with the mplayer plugin:
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=239046
The results could be helpful in determining whether this is a plugin-wide issue.

I have sound in the mplayer plugin, but still no sound in flash. thinking on
that topic though, wouldn't the mplayer plugin use mplayer's sound system, not
mozilla's?
I don't remember if I've had any sound from mozilla at all. is there a testcase
using sound not through a plug-in?

Typeahead find, I thought, was an example... Yet I can't seem to get it to make
a sound. And that's me as someone having no problems with flash. I don't know if
the new mail notification would be a good enough example.

Aren't there some websites that have sounds playing?
Comment 13•22 years ago
|

Not without plugins. Sounds are put in by <EMBED> (or <OBJECT> someday when IE
gets its act together). They require plugins.

I am using Slackware 10 with Dropline Gnome and Mozilla.org's Mozilla Firefox
0.9.1 for Linux. I have Alsa 1.0.5 installed with OSS emulation. I have
Shockwave Flash 7.0 r25 installed.
Music plays in everything else except Mozilla Firefox. There is no sound when I
use Find As You Type or visit any flash animations.

well, I figured out my problem, so I'm changing this bug. now maybe using esd is
some debian specific feature, but if I choose that, things still don't work. My
problem was esd was running when I tried the others, and esd itself doesn't work
in mozilla (for me). I'm surprised more people don't have this problem. I've had
it on 2 different computers so far, though both running debian.
Summary: no sound in any flash → no sound w/ esd

So what's the status on this bug? This one has been plaguing me for about 6
months now. If this could be resolved, I would be very happy. This may be
specific to to Debian, but it's not specific to Debian's Mozilla. No Mozilla has
sound w/ ESD in Debian. This obviously isn't a plug-in bug, so I'm moving it to
browser-general as I can't see a better place. Perhaps someone there will have a
better idea of what's going on.

If it's not plugin-specific, it should go to XP-APPS. Did you file a bug with
Debian? This might be something they caused.

Setting OS to Linux. ESD is not Debian-specific. This might happen with other
distros. Still, you should file a bug with Debian. Do you get sound with other
sound-systems?

It's submitted in Debian as
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=252919 there's been no action
taken on it in the 102 days it's been submitted. I get sound with OSS, but not
with arts.

Are there any other programs that have this issue? Did you download a Debian
package, or did you install it from the binary or installer off FTP?

Mozilla is the only one I had issues with. Other programs worked fine with esd
or oss. I tried the Debian package and the installer from mozilla.org.

Sean:
I'm not having sound with typeahead find error sound either, even with
accessibility.typeaheadfind.eneablesound = true in prefs.... So something makes
me think that's not a good marker of whether there are sound issues or not. I
filed http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=260081 on it.
That's why I'm beginning to think this is a flash-only bug. Though I can't rule
out that maybe Flash exposes an issue in our code that no other plugin does, and
perhaps typeahead does, we can't be sure about that. So, I'm not going to close
this bug, simply because I'm not sure if Flash or us are the culprits.
You said you weren't having this problem with the mplayer plugin. Is there any
other plugin other than flash that has this problem? Please try to reproduce
this bug in another plugin.
Taking.

mplayer uses its own methods for playing sounds. so having sound there really
has nothing to do with mozilla.
I don't know another plugin that uses sound. What is another plugin that uses
mozilla to play sound?
I tried the typeaheadfind, but that seems to be a totally separate issue. I
don't have sound there even when I do have sound in flash. setting it to a .wav
file did nothing. setting it to default gives me a bunch of garbage followed by:
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:1155:(snd_pcm_hw_open) open /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p failed: Device
or resource busy
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:1155:(snd_pcm_hw_open) open /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p failed: Device
or resource busy
thought mozilla is the app making ALSA busy. actually, this is with firefox. I
can test with mozilla if you want. when it's set to beep, I do get a beep though.
Comment 24•21 years ago
|

This is weird... I tried "default", and "file:///usr/share/sounds/pop.wav" and
it worked, but "beep" doesn't work. So I must not be having the same issue you
are having with Typeahead find.
biesi in http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=260081#c2
"mozilla uses ESD when it can. if another app keeps the sound device busy,
there's nothing mozilla can do."
Sean: Do you get any messages about device or resource busy when playing your Flash?

I'm kind of at a loss as to what just happened.
let me try to explain by saying what does work and what doesn't.
alsa:
sound in flash works
typeaheadfind: default does not.
esd:
sound in flash now works (I have no idea what just happened)
typeaheadfind: default does work
I hadn't tested sound with esd since 1.7 until today. I wish I knew what had
happened to cause this to not work when I was testing before. I guess there's 3
explanations of why this works now and not before. 1) something changed in
mozilla since 1.6. 2) something changed in the debian packages since then 3)
something change in esd on debian since then 4) something changed on my
system/methodology since then.
I'll try 1.6 again just to be sure.

alright, those are working on my system now too. So it was some kind of Debian
issue. Thanks for the help in isolating this. Oh, about the beep thing, perhaps
fedora turns the beep off by default? try xset b on.

V. Sounds like the device was becoming busy for some reason. It might re-surface
later, so try to keep in mind what things you are doing on the computer before
it starts happening so that it can be isolated later. Perhaps ESD on your system
is not set to mix sounds?
