Looks like you have an incompatible language pack installed. See also bug 204445. This WFM with no additional language packs installed.

I had run 1.7b german befor I used this 1.7rc1 installer. But now preferences appearance Languages only shows up with English (US)
If it's about a conflict with Language pack, then INVALID. There is no RC1 German available yet, and no language pack for it as well. And it won't be availble before next wekk due to an important exam I want to pass tommorrow. Test again then with a current calendar version.

I had removed the german Mozilla version 1.7b and reinstlled 1.7rc2. there is no other language pack left but en-us and en (Navigator-Languages) or US/US Region (Appearance-Languages/Content) and today I tried to install Calendar again, but the symptom persists an extra area below the status line <key id="key_calendar" ... __^

What Calendar version do you have installed? If the Calendar version you use doesn't have the locale version string fpr 1.7 rc2/final, then translation won't work with that German pack.
Also, you may try creating a new profile for testing of this bug, without the german lang pack, A pref could still be set for german somewhere, which could cause cal to be out-of-place with that.
removing <RDF:Description RDF:about="urn:mozilla:package:calendar"> <c:selectedSkin RDF:resource="urn:mozilla:skin:modern/1.0:calendar"/> <c:selectedLocale RDF:resource="urn:mozilla:locale:de-AT:calendar"/> </RDF:Description> from my personal c:\Dokumente und ...\nutzer\Anwendungsdaten\Mozilla\Profiles\default\123tre33.slt\chrome\chrome.rdf solved the problem, but now most of the calender entries have doubled !?! furthermore it would be a good idea to create a xpi removal tool and all xpi installed should be listed in preference-advanced-Software Installation and it should be possible to select them there for removal.
