A file named "Chapter_1_An_Introduction_to_Beijing_Oper1.doc" in my Yahoo! mail
inbox when clicked on for downloading opens up the regular Firefox download
manager. I tried to save it but the window hung and then all my browser windows
became unresponsive. After a few minutes of no response I closed the browser
windows manually.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open my Yahoo! mail inbox
2. Click on the link to download Chapter_1_An_Introduction_to_Beijing_Oper1.doc
3. Click "Open" on the download dialog
Actual Results:
The browser freezes and the mouse cursor remains an hourglass.
Expected Results:
Saved the document to disk
No errors reported by browser. It just remains unresponsive indefinitely.

Hi Reed,
It works for me, 20040423 Firefox/0.8.0+, Mac OS X 10.2.8. I sent a Word file to
my Yahoo account and then safely downloaded it again. Maybe this is a
Windows-specific problem, or maybe it requires a file of a certain size (mine
was only 24 kB)?. Also, did you have it set to simply save the file to the hard
disk, or open it in Word?
Maybe someone else can confirm this problem in Windows, but there are a few
other things you could try in the meantime:
- Are you using any browser themes other than the default Firefox one? If so,
please try disabling them.
- Are you using any browser extensions? If so, please try disabling them.
- Your browser's a few months old now. Could you try a more recent nightly
build? http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/
If none of those fix it, please try starting with a fresh profile, as your
user profile may have corrupted. See
http://texturizer.net/firefox/faq.html#profilemanager for how to start with a
fresh profile.
Please let us know if any of those things fix it. Please reply via the comments
box on this bug page, as replying by email doesn't work.
cheers :)
The file is 79kb. I choose "Save" from the dialog box, not open in word. I
only have OpenOffice on my computer. Firefox is running without any additional
themes and the only extensions I have installed are Googlebar and Blockfall. I
will try the nightly build and tell you how it goes.
Now I've installed the nightly build and when I click the download link and
click save it stalls about 15 seconds and then a dialog appears saying "A script
on this page is causing Mozilla to run slowly. Do you want to stop this
script?" and then I clicked yes. Other files can be downloaded from Yahoo mail
without problem. Maybe the length of the filename is a problem?

I doubt it's the length of the filename, as I gave my file the same name as
yours. However, as I said, I'm using OS X t test this. I can't test it out on
Windows XP until Tuesday.
Could you please try temporarily disabling the extensions?
thanks!

Ok, thanks. I'll test it out in XP on Tuesday and see if I can reproduce it
(unless someone else manages to first).
Does it work ok with IE?
I found the exact cause of the bug. It is caused only when I try to download a
document to a location in which it already exists. The first time I downloaded
the original file, the download happened so quickly that I did not notice the
download complete pop-up. I then clicked it again to try to download the file
and that is when Firefox hung, because the document already existed in the
default save-to directory. I have the Windows desktop as my default saving
directory. Whenever I try to save a file that already exists on the desktop the
same behavior occurs--namely, Firefox hangs.

Hmm, interesting.
I tried that using Windows XP and 20040330 Firefox/0.8.0+, and downloaded the
file from Yahoo mail. The file I was downloading had the same name as yours.
If the file was already on the desktop and I tried to save it again:
- if downloads were configured to automatically save to desktop, then it just
created a new file with a -1, -2 etc. extension
- if it asked me where to save the file and I selected desktop, then it warned
me that the file would be overwritten. If I confirmed that was ok, then it
simply overwrote it.
Either way, no crash.
You didn't mention trying with a new profile (see comment 1). Could you please
try that?

removing session-dependent URL
Reed, please do try this with a clean profile and let us know if the problem has
solved itself for you. Thanks.

Per comment 9, this also WFM. Reporter, please reopen if you can reproduce on a
recent nightly build.
