The Toolbar-thing that's just started appearing on the bottom of every Bugzilla page strikes me as being inconsistent with the Bugzilla philosophy of simplicity. In particular: * I obviously know what Bugzilla is and what it can do; otherwise, I wouldn't be logged in and using it. ;) Why do I need to be told this, in specially boxed text, on every page Bugzilla page? * I'm logged in. Therefore, I already have an account. Why would I want to be presented with the option of making a new account on every single query or page that I view? * How often do people do bug reports, or edit the (two?) user settings that are configurable? Is it enough that we need to be presented with this option on every query, and every bug report that we submit? I've never personally logged out from Bugzilla, either. * The positioning of the "Find" and "bug #" is backwards; we read & process information on a page from top to down, and from left to right, and the form should be laid out correspondingly. (You type in the bug number first, then press Find.) I'd at least suggest making the toolbar a configurable option that can be removed by preference.

Yours is the only negative feedback I've seen. I've got lots of positive feedback. First of all, the line: This is Bugzilla: the Mozilla bug system. For more information about what Bugzilla is and what it can do, see mozilla.org's bug pages. has always been there. It just used to be at the top of every page. It's been moved to the bottom, since it seems less out of the way there. The set of items to put in there is always up for debate, and of course people won't all agree. I tend to agree that "New Account" probably should go away if you're already logged in. Everything else is probably useful to someone or another at some time or another. The "Find bug number" wording is exactly the way the main bugzilla page checked into CVS has it (mozilla.org has a customized version of this page). It's designed to be terse and use up little real estate. The request to have the toolbar be configurable in some way is very reasonable. I've already decided I might want to let people tweak what "My bugs" means; see bug 24164. I have changed the summary of this bug to reflect that desire.

Thanks; quick comments: * Regarding the "Find" button, terse is fine; I meant that it's ordered in the opposite direction as the bugzilla.mozilla.org page, and every other form I've ever seen on the web. Bugzilla does [SHOW] (bug # field). The footer, however, does (bug # field) [FIND]. The unnecessarily different button names aside, I'm not aware of any forms on the web which a submit button to the left of the associated data entry field (for reasons explained above). I'd suggest making the footer consistent with the bugzilla.mozilla.org page I've seen on the web. (fluff/nitpicking follows) * Yes, I've seen the "This is Bugzilla..." text on the top before. You're using a box for the footer that's used across mozilla.org to draw _attention_ to a text block to surround this text, which (IMHO) draws even more attention to it.; e.g. community.html. Moreso, if it'll be the novice users who will want to see the text & link, wouldn't it make sense for it to be at the top where they'd see it first? (assuming the text is even necessary, rather than just something that's always been there) $.02

"New account" now only appears if you are logged in. You can make "My bugs" go away. You can make any of your named queries appear. This bug remains open, as there are other things people will want to tune (some of which are discussed here), but some progress has been made.

tara@tequilarista.org is the new owner of Bugzilla and Bonsai. (For details, see my posting in netscape.public.mozilla.webtools, news://news.mozilla.org/38F5D90D.F40E8C1A%40geocast.com .)

Though the customizability aspect of this is a core issue, this particular set is arguably a customization issue for Mozilla.org.

I'm finding myself really confused by the comments in this bug. Half the stuff listed here has been dealt with since the bug was opened, and the other half I'm having a heck of a time trying to figure out what you wanted. If this is still an issue, please open a NEW bug and describe only the issues which still apply. Thanks.
