In Mail and IM: 1) Open the Sidebar. (or in IM open the buddy list view) 2) Resize the area devoted to sidebar panels by clicking and dragging the "My Panels" title bar. 3) If you drag the title bar either into the folder view area in mail, the buddy list area in IM, or into the sidebar content areas in either, the title bar you are dragging disappears.
