Just forward to yourself message with huge (in my case about 80) number of 
attachments and try to read this message in three-pane window configuration.

I'm unable to downsize attachments pane and increase size of visible text
message.

Looks like it is duplicate to bug 242531, but I'm not sure.

I see the same thing here with Thunderbird version 0.7.1 on Linux.  This
basically makes reading a message with a large number of attachments very
difficult in a small message window (and if running at a low resolution,
resizing the message window is not an option).

It would be nice if there was a way to hide or resize the attachments pane.
