User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7) Gecko/20040621 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7) Gecko/20040621 When trying to display the "MathML in action" page from http://www.mozilla.org/projects/mathml/start.xhtml using mozilla-1.7, the page initially loads a blank page. Using the scrollbars makes part of the page display, but it is still distorted. (I can provide screenshots if necessary). mozilla-1.6 worked fine. Same thing happens on all my mozilla builds (on redhat 8.0/9, Fedora Core 1/2, and RH Enterprise 3). Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce:
FYI, changing my preferences to use Mathematica fonts instead of the default (TeX?), makes the page at least render (instead of being blank), but elements are misplaced. Screenshot forthcoming

Any idea what has triggered this bug? The screenshot suggests that it is an Xft-build. Although the Xft-build wasn't perfect before, it looks as if it has regressed. The screenshot shows characters that are jamming now.

FYI, yes, this is with an Xft build (AFAIK, which is required for proper MathML support/display).
I can't reproduce the bug with the trunk build(gtk2 + xft) on Fedora Core 1. I'll try 1.7 later. Rex, what's the output of 'locale' command? How about your font setting in Edit|Preference....?
fonts: serif, sans-serif, monospace (fontconfig aliases for the bitstream-vera fonts on Fedora Core) $ locale LANG=en_US.UTF-8 LC_CTYPE="en_US.UTF-8" LC_NUMERIC="en_US.UTF-8" LC_TIME="en_US.UTF-8" LC_COLLATE="en_US.UTF-8" LC_MONETARY="en_US.UTF-8" LC_MESSAGES="en_US.UTF-8" LC_PAPER="en_US.UTF-8" LC_NAME="en_US.UTF-8" LC_ADDRESS="en_US.UTF-8" LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.UTF-8" LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US.UTF-8" LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.UTF-8" LC_ALL=
I couldn't reproduce the bug with 1.7branch build (my own) on Fedora core1 under en_US.UTF-8 locale. My font settting for Western is identical to yours. So are aliases for sans, serif, monospace in fonts.config file. Because I have been building with my patch for bug 215219, I suspected that *might* (although not so likely) prevent this bug from showing up. I got rid of the patch and rebuilt it (i.e I built with the same source as 1.7), but MathML is rendered in my 1.7 build as in 1.6. I went through patches commited to nsFontMetricsXft.cpp since this February and couldn't come up with an immediate culprit.
FYI, here the configure flags I'm using to build mozilla (as I said, these same options worked for moz-1.6): ./configure \ --host=%{_host} --build=%{_build} --target=%{_target_platform} \ --prefix=%{_prefix} --libdir=%{_libdir} --mandir=%{_mandir} \ --enable-optimize \ --disable-debug --disable-pedantic \ --disable-tests --disable-short-wchar \ --with-default-mozilla-five-home=%{_libdir}/mozilla-%{version} \ %{!?debug_package:--enable-strip-libs} \ --enable-nspr-autoconf \ --enable-extensions \ --enable-crypto \ --enable-xprint \ --without-system-nspr \ --enable-svg --enable-svg-renderer-libart \ --enable-calendar \ --with-system-libjpeg \ --with-system-libmng \ --with-system-libpng \ --with-system-zlib \ --enable-default-toolkit=gtk2 \ --enable-xft
I dropped a patch I borrowed from Mandrake, and now the misrendering is gone. I still have the issue that the page initially loads blank when using TeX fonts (until I use scrollbars to force sections of the page to refresh). When using Mathematica fonts, the page now renders perfectly.

(In reply to comment #9) > I dropped a patch I borrowed from Mandrake, and now the misrendering is gone. Gee, it would have saved me some time if you had written earlier that you had a patch from Mandrake. Out of curiosity, what's their patch like? > I still have the issue that the page initially loads blank when using TeX > fonts (until I use scrollbars to force sections of the page to refresh). When > using Mathematica fonts, the page now renders perfectly. I'll try to reproduce this problem later this week (I won't have any time to look into this next two days)
My apologies about the bad Mandrake (ctl2) patch (and subsequent removal). When I was first investigating, I had done a quick scan of all my local patches to see if any were relavent to MathML, and I missed that one. For the record, my previous attempts at using MathML on non-xft builds ended up crashing xfs (X font server). freetype-enabled builds manually pointing at the mathml fonts ended with mozilla crashes.
I'm convinced now that I brought the bug/problem on myself by including extraneous patches. Move on, nothing more to see here. (-:
