Did you install 1.7 on top of a previous installation?

lemme guess ;) ...you were running mozilla already had some extensions installed, you decided to upgraded mozilla, didn't read the README, didn't fully nicely uninstall Mozilla via the control panel and clear out the \program files\mozilla.org folder and then your new Mozilla unexpectedly crashes? If i'm right, then this is a dupe of bug 195600... :)
dup of bug 240336? The error message seems to appear when user has an outdated activex plugin installed (npmozax.dll). Please check your plugins dir and remove the faulty plugin there. (There is a version of it for 1.6 but not 1.7)

removing npmozax.dll did the trick. Now things work again.
