To reduce amount of data to download (I'm on a dial-up connection) I
usually keep the "Load images" option turned off. On and off I hit
on pages where image placeholder are not shown as if there were no images.
I didn't notice until I started to read sentences like "Look at figure X
for an example" and such, but there was no figure x. This has happened
with FireFox 0.8 and 0.9 on several pages. One is

There you will find references to images that you can't look at unless
you re-enable the loading of images, but this leads you to load the page
twice and if you save the page for offline reading without first checking
for this problem you're fried.

When you have image loading turned off, Firefox only shows placeholders for
images without alt text specified.  The figure in
http://opensource.oreilly.com/news/subversion_ch02.html has alt text specified
as the empty string.  Hixie can probably explain why or dup.
