I have to press File -> Save As -> Draft
two times to have my messages saved as draft.
I've generated a IMAP log which has:
"failed creating protocol instance to play queued url:imap"

can you try a recent trunk or aviary branch build, from after July 2nd? This
works for me - after I fixed bug 248240. I don't know why they should be
related, but it did work for me...
