User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.8a3) Gecko/20040716
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.8a3) Gecko/20040716

I downloaded the nightly build from:
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/nightly/2004-07-19-04-0.8/
and took thunderbirdsetup.exe

I installed it and fired it up and it comes up blank. I have no account,
mailboxes, etc. (thought it appears they are still on disk). If I go to
tools/account-settings or tools/options, nothing shows up. Actually, none of
the buttons do anything, except for "write" which give an error and the help
button. Completely brain dead.

I was running a nightly build from a few days ago and all was well five minutes
before the install. Things only stopped working after the install.

I've tried going back to the 0.7.2 release, but this doesn't work either. I can
do the "about thunderbird" to see the 0.7.2 is installed, but that is about it.

One thing I noticed is that it appears that mozilla was trying to shutdown. It
asked me if it could close tabs. Is this normal during an install? I don't
remember. I didn't do anything out of the ordinary during this install that I
can think of.

Seems we have an install bug, but can anyone tell me what I need to change to
get it working again.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.install the nightly build
2.
3.

Actual Results:
thunderbird doesn't respond and all my accounts and settings are gone.

Expected Results:
Expected it to work as usual.
Mostly likely a dupe of the Firefox smoketest blocker:

Bug #252063
No this isn't a dupe. I just downloaded a tinderbox build that includes the fix
and Thunderbird still does not startup.

this is benjamin's regression. Non installer builds work fine FYI.

bug 251906 seems to be covering this same problem for Firefox. The tree should
stay closed until this is really fixed.
Have a look at bsmedberg's checkin from 2004-07-19 06:43, which adjusts the
Firefox installer to changes he made earlier (2004-07-19 06:03):
http://bonsai.mozilla.org/cvsquery.cgi?branch=&date=explicit&mindate=2004-07-19+06%3A43&maxdate=2004-07-19+06%3A43
I bet we need to port that to mail/installer/windows/:
http://lxr.mozilla.org/aviarybranch/source/mail/installer/windows/
I am continuing to make changes that will affect both apps installer. I should
have all the firefox changes done in a couple hours, and can then turn my
attention back to the thunderbird issues, which are slightly more involved due
to the repackaging scripts.

bsmedberg, can I ask why we started landing this before all of it was done and
ready? It seems pretty dangerous to intentionally say we are going to break
thunderbird and firefox until we can finish the work....

At the very least some formal notification saying the build won't be useable for
several days should have gone out.

I downloaded the installer build the tinderbox machine downloaded and the app
now comes up.

However blocker bugs: Bug #251628, Bug #251626 are still present which cause DTD
errors in extensions, themes and profile dialogs. I also see DTD errors in the
attachments panel under Options / Attachments.

We're getting closer though!
This is now fixed.

Please note that I did not intentionally break either Firefox or Thunderbird; as
we discussed at the l10n meeting the locale changes were likely to cause oddball
regressions (and still are, as the thunderbird centralization is not done yet).
I spent 6+ hours figuring out why the repackaging script wasn't doing what it
was supposed to, but I needed to keep landing the firefox changes, or else the
same kinds of regressions were going to keep happening. I built linux
thunderbird several times during this process to make sure that it would launch,
but it takes 4+ hours to build a win32 installer to test the repackaging scripts.

Sorry to say, but it is still broken here. I still have the big bad list of xul
errors after trying to launch a freshly made build.

I get your checkin, and still nothing.

I had to go back to my last working build, made on 18 july.

Note: I am using Linux Fedora 2
mozjf: make sure that you don't have
<objdir>/toolkit/content/contents/contents.rdf contents-platform.rdf
contents-region.rdf

The build system won't clean these files automatically, and since I have changed
the contents-platform.rdf file this can be causing the many odd chrome errors.
I just downloaded today's 7-20 nightly. The installer installs correctly but
when it launches the app, chrome never appears. The process remains in memory.

Anyone else seeing this?

I downloaded this build:

http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/nightly/latest-0.8/ThunderbirdSetup.exe
I just corrected two more entries in the en-US-mail manifest.
In answer to comment #13 : I wipe my sources after using them, and then, I
unpack a backup.

So, I always use clean sources before building.
I just downloaded the tinderbox generated build that has all of the latest
changes and it still hangs on startup. No chrome comes up. The process is
running though.

If I try to force the profile manager up I get a chrome dialog with a DTD error
that says <dialog

officially re-opening per my comment in c#17

Some people still have an old copy of toolkit/content/contents-platform.rdf in
their build tree, which can cause CVS conflicts if you're using a srcdir build
and can cause silent malfunction if you're using an objdir build. I think that
this problem is affecting the patrocles tinderbox (an empty version of this file
is appearing in the installer archives). This problem can affect both
thunderbird and firefox builds. I cannot find any automated way to fix it. I'm
poking myk/leaf to see if I can get the tinderboxen fixed up.

I just built a thunderbird installer with an up-to-date branch which seems to
work fine. Can we re-open the branch?
I toasted the entire toolkit directory Sunday night to make the patrocles build
go green. I'll do it again to see if that helps.
I just downloaded the build off of patrocles after I nuked mozilla\toolkit again.

The build now launches! -ProfileManager works. So do the theme and extension
dialogs! Woo hooo.

You're lucky :p

On my linux fedora 2, nothing at all. I opened bug 252404.
07-21 branch build (Zip) will still not run
Attached image gif file screenshot
sorry about that last one
Joe your isssue with the zip builds is probably a dupe of 252404. I'm guessing
the static installed-chrome.txt file hasn't been updated with the packaging name
changes yet.
I see the bug has been marked as fixed, but I have the same problems as I
originally did. When thunderbird comes up, the mailboxes aren't there, nor do I
get any response from the application.

I've tried to install the latest nightly build and 0.7.2, but no luck. Is there
something that I need to do to get the process bootstrapped and how do I do so
without losing my previous account setting and mailboxes?

haven't had this problem for a while, marking verified.
