User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/125.2 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/125.8
Build Identifier: version 0.7 (20040616)

On my Mac OS X and Win2k machines both running Thunderbird 0.7 builds, Thunderbird will frequently
indicate there is new mail. On Win2k this is the system tray icon and on OS X this is the
Dock icon changing. However, there is in fact no new mail available in any folder regardless of whether
it is marked for checking or not.

This is possibly related to bug 250533.

If this is a vagary of our IMAP daemon I can arrange for a Thunderbird developer to get an account on it
for testing purposes.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Thunderbird 0.7.x
2. Setup an IMAP account
3. Wait for the application to indicate there is new mail
Actual Results:
There was actually no new mail.

Expected Results:
It shouldn't indicate there is new mail if there is none.
I meant to also note that this did not occur when I was previously using POP3 with the account in
question.

---------

This happens me always when mail is read in a Local Folder in Thunderbird - the
new mail icon does not dissapear from the tray.

I am also seeing this on Win XP. In particular, using IMAP, when I receive a
new message, the new mail tray icon appears as expected. However, if I end up
reading the message on another machine, thunderbird's main window detects this
fact and un-bolds the message and removes the unread message count next to
the "Inbox" item in the folder tree, but the tray icon does not disappear
until I click on another mail box. The tray icon should disappear
automatically if the unread message count drops to zero.
This is not limited to IMAP. I have only POP3 accounts, and the same happens for
me. Version 1.0, Mac OS X.
I've observed this. This could be considered a data-loss bug in that once the
mail icon is in the tray (Win32 OS's) there won't be a mail-arrival sound.

As an RFE it would be nice if it were configurable that every incoming mail made
a sound and showed the "alert". Some of us only get 5 or 6 messages a day and it
would be convenient if TBird could act the way GMail does for low-mail-volume users.
With up to version 0.6+ (20050212) in WinXP,

If I delete new mail without reading it, trayicon "new mail" does not disappear.
until I click on another folder in this mailbox.
But if I click on another mailbox it does not disappear.

*** Bug 279820 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
I am running a small business local area net using Win2K Pro on all five
machines. On three of those we recently installed Thunderbird for the e-mail
client, and two continue to have Microsoft's Outlook Express.

We are running Thunderbird version 1.0.2 (20050317), which should be fairly
current, on all three machines.

All three of the machines running Thunderbird (one tower system, two laptops)
exhibit this syndrome. Occasionally there will be a new-message sound, and the
new message flag pops up, announcing that "Local Folders has *n* new
messages". Each time, the number increments, but when we bring the Thunderbird
window open or to the front, no new messages show. It is very distracting, and
has caused several of our people to disregard real new messages because they
thought it was just another false alarm.

Several of those reporting this bug also note that the system tray icon does
not behave in an expected fashion. It requires switching folders to get it to
reset and disappear. I confirm that this is the case on all three of the
machines we have equipped with the listed build of Thunderbird. By the way,
causing the icon to disappear does *not* reset the unread message count, which
it should. Or rather, as another person stated, the expected activity is that
the icon should disappear when the unread message count falls to zero.

I have found that sometimes when the new message sound occurs and the new
message icon becomes active in the system tray, and there appears to be no new
message, if I use the Get Mail function, a new message appears. However, it
appears in duplicate.

Please fix this set of issues as soon as possible. It is causing disruption in
my company. I really want to use this e-mail client instead of Outlook, but if
it can not reliably and properly indicate new e-mails, we will have to roll it
back. I suggest upgrading the severity to Normal and the Priority to P3, since
this set of issues is really disturbing to a user and it affects the function
of the e-mail client. Please inform me by e-mail when this bug is fixed and
the fix is included in a new build.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Brian Pietsch, this appears to be the same as bug 301583.

Michael Vance, John Fairbairn: are you also seeing this problem on accounts that
are being accessed from multiple machines simultaneously?

Finbarr, that is bug 222068. This bug is about the tray icon *appearing* not
about it *persisting*.

I don't believe so... that bug specifically mentions accessing the same account from two different
machines, which is not the case for me.

Um... then what did you mean in comment 3 when you wrote:

??

Sorry, you're right. I was thinking of something else.
When filtering an IMAP mailbox, mail that is deleted will still trigger the new mail tray icon, and display "email@address has 0 new messages" as the tooltip.
Steps to recreate:
1. Add an IMAP email account
2. Create a message filter to delete incoming email based on whatever criteria
3. Set mailbox to auto check for new mail every n minutes
4. Look for tray icon to appear even after message is filtered.

Additional note: Clicking the Get Mail button, or selecting another IMAP folder will clear the tray icon.

Yes, I see this on an account accessed from my laptop and workstation. In fact I'm looking at Thunderbird version 1.5 (20051201) right now, and there is no new mail but a "2 new mail" badge on the Dock icon. If I flip over and load a folder the badge goes away, then a few minutes pass and it reappears.

Yes, I see this happen when I access one account from any of the three systems that can access the e-mail account using Thunderbird. BTW, I have updated to V 1.0.7, and this is still happening.

Thanks -

John
The initial reported bug is also happening on my PC. I get email notifications every time TB polls for pop3 (multiple accounts). At first I thought I had messages hidden on collapsed folders, but after marking everything "read" I'm still getting the problem. The problem became noticable about a month ago in v1.0 I've installed v1.5 but the issue still exists.

Additionally, hovering the mouse over the email notification icon on the taskbar reads "Local Folders has x new messages" (incorrect amount).

I have recently added an IMAP account, but this has little traffic, so I don't believe the "new emails" refers to that account, but possibly the creation of the IMAP account is responsible for the error?

I am using one PC and do not check my email anywhere else.
Something else odd and almost certainly related - when "local folders" is selected (see attachment) the taskbar displays minus values! (Note 11 phantom messages on the popup).
I get this same problem with Thunderbird 1.5.0.4 on Win XP.
Only used on this single PC, open most of the day, POP and NNTP accounts only.
Frequently during the day I get new mail notifications of a single new email.
Checking Thunderbird shows no new messages anywhere ; changing to a different mail folder in TB clears the notification.
No filters exist that delete mail, only move it around.
This reminds me of a bug: When I accidentally mark a message as Junk (happens quite often, because of the "J"-Keyboard-Shortcut). This causes in my configuration Thunderbird to move it into the Junk folder. I then select the Junk-Folder and mark this message as "Not-Junk". The message still stays in the Junk-Folder, so I move it manually back to Inbox. This always causes a new mail notification, which I cannot cause to be removed, because there is no new message to be read. I'm using only IMAP-Folders, I don't know whether this makes a difference.
Regarding the tray icon issue, I have not seen this since I upgraded to V1.5.0.4. As far as the phony message issue, that too seems to have been resolved.

Comment 21 does bring something to mind, however. That issue is that going into the Junk folder and removing the Junk designation from a message does not return the message to the Inbox. It should. Or perhaps it should return the message to whatever folder it came from when it was labeled as Junk. Maybe there should be a way to select for which one of those three options (remain, Inbox, or originating folder) should happen.

If you want, this can be moved to a different bug or to the wish list.

Regards -

John

I am running V1.5.0.4. and have false/phantom messages and the icon issue. I have POP3 and IMAP folders, but the issues were present *before* the IMAP account was created. These bugs have not resolved since they began. Suggestions (other than those previously submitted) would be appreciated.

I expereinced this same problem on 1.5.0.5 which I just installed. One thing I did note was that I keep getting the notification that a message had been recieved but nothing appeared in my Inbox. The message popped up several times and the number of messages recieved kept increasing but no mail in my Inbox???? It was not until I did a "Get Mail" that several mesages appeared in my Inbox. A quick check of the setting for the Account / Server setting/and the tick in the box of "Automatically download new messages" and it seems to be solved. It semms without the option set you get notfied of the messgae arriving but it does not load to you Inbox until you do a "Get Mail". Happy to be told I'm wrong but it seems to be working for me now and I'm keeping my fingers crossed
I'm having a similar problem since upgrading Thunderbird on Linux to 1.5.0.7 (from an earlier version, probably 1.5.0). I did not have a problem previously. My only mailbox is an IMAP server. After some period of time using Thunderbird, I get the new mail sound (I'm using a custom .wav file) roughly once a minute, even with no new mail present. Pressing the Get Mail button does not show any new mail, and this does not seem to be related to junk mail, as there is no new spam either. Typically the problem exists for 4 or 5 minutes, then goes away. Closing and restarting Thunderbird always makes the problem go away.

This is on a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 (U4) x86_64 box, running the 32-bit version of Thunderbird, with the MagicSLR and BlunderDelay extensions.
To update my previous comment, the BlunderDelay extension is definitely triggering this issue. I posted to the BlunderDelay support mailing list, and the author says "It's not that I'm overly confident in BlunderDelay, but just that there is so little to BD that it's hard to blame anything on it." So I suspect some sort of interaction between the (buggy) biff implementation and the particular actions that BD performs. I would urge anyone looking at this bug to consider installing BD as a tool to trigger false biffs.
I must revise my previous comment, again. Sorry for the additional email, cc'ers...

I have BlunderDelay installed, but disabled. The only other extensions are MagicSLR, which I think is GUI stuff only, and Talkback. I got three erroneous audio biffs in a row (one a minute, I suspect) just now. It's possible that as many of two of them were related to spam being filtered (which should not cause a biff, of course), but definitely not all three. So I don't think BlunderDelay is the sole cause of my particular pattern of problems, although it does seem to make things worse...

What a weird bug.
Harlan Harris: The problem is spurious audio-alerts only? No tray icon, no slide-up alert? Are you using the RSS feature? There's a known problem where RSS is causing a beep on new items but otherwise not alerting: bug 323911.
Mike: I'm using Linux, where there is no notification on the tray icon or visual slide-up alert. Audio notifications only. And no, I'm not using RSS at all with Thunderbird.

Reporter, does the issue still occur with the latest supported 2.0.0.x / Shredder trunk nightlies?

(1.5.0.x is now end-of-life and the latest supported Thunderbird version 2 is 2.0.0.16)

When this was changed in status I didn't have the chance to check what my T-Bird version was but it was still happening. I am posting because (a) I want new information considered and (b) it happens on T-Bird 3.1.4 which I believe to be the latest version.

I'm running T-bird 3.1.4 on Windows XP SP 2. The configuration uses the IMAP protocol to access an Exchange server, and my account has several rules server-side that move messages from the inbox to other folders. A message will come in and then Exchange will move it from the inbox to the folder it belongs in. The tray icon will sometimes come on when these messages arrive, and then stay on after they have moved out of the inbox. If the icon's being on bothers me I can put highlight focus on the Drafts folder and then on the inbox folder, and the tray icon will go away.

I have an RSS feed configured in the profile. The audio alerts from the RSS feed don't concern me. The fact that the tray icon does not reflect the inbox status accurately is what concerns me most. It only concerns me a little that the count I see when I hover on the icon is totally wrong.

The only T-bird extension I have is OpenPGP.

Finally I found a solution that works for me!
