Unable to print shipping labels, have USPS charge credit card for "Click & Ship"
services.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Start at https://ecap21.usps.com/cgi-bin/ecapbv/scripts/login.jsp
2.(May have to create an account to log-in). Then click on "Sign In". It
should take you to https://sss-web.usps.com/ds/jsps/ds_landing.jsp
3.Try to print sample lable. Should take you to
https://sss-web.usps.com/ds/jsps/pl_dummy.jsp

Actual Results:
Get message "Sorry, we are unable to process your request due to a temporary
communication failure. Please try again later." This only happens using
Mozilla in linux. I've tried this using both SuSE 9.1 and Xandros 2.0, both
using Mozilla 1.6. It works fine using Mozilla under Windows XP.

Expected Results:
It should have printed sample label and/or, if I was trying to print actual
label, charged my credit card and printed label.

Here is a copy of email to tech support at USPS.

Dear Sam,

Its a compatibility issue between your Linux OS and our system, even though
Mozilla does work.

Thank you.

     Dear James,

Thanks for the reply. I can use the same computer, using Windows XP and
Mozilla, and have no problems. It is only when I boot into linux, again
using Mozilla (with Java installed) that the problems arise. It is behind
the same firewall and nothing else changes except the operating system.

Dear Mr. Crawford,

Thank you for contacting us. Currently the list below contains all of the
known causes of the communication failure message:

1) Your system is behind a firewall, router or switch.

2) The use of special characters (&,$,%,@,#, commas, periods dashes etc) in
your address fields.

3) The server at the credit card company to verify payment information is
temporarily offline.

4) Use of special characters in your profile name, company name or address.

5) Use of a state that is not listed in the drop down box. Please note that
not all state/territories except Confirmation Services which will limit
their availability to be used with Click-N-Ship.

If any of these apply to your attempts than you will receive that message.

Thank you,

James

CUSTOMER COMMENT
----------------
Comment Type: Technical Inquiry
Comment: I am unable to print labels when I use Mozilla on a linux system. I
get the following error message: "Error displaying label. Sorry, we were
unable to process your request due to a temporary communication failure.
Please try again later." This happens on more than one version of linux.
Any ideas? I have java installed on the system.
Just a follow up. I installed Firefox on my Xandros system, copied over the
java plugins, and can use it to access this site just fine.
So is this now working for you?
If not try a new version of moz or FF from mozilla.org. Does Java work on other
sites?
Product: Browser → Seamonkey
I think it's a Java integration issue.
Mozilla, FireFox, and Internet Explorer cannot print labels from USPS.
The only browser that worked was Safari.
does it work on mac with the osx java plugin from sourceforge?
Workaround: uninstall Java VM 1.5, now known as 5.0. Then install 1.4.2 from
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html

We had this problem in Win98, IE and Firefox.

Googling on "usps java crash" the first results shows this is a "Topcrasher."
