I see following possiblilities:

a) just add space
b) adding a border around progress meter
b) add a border line at the top of the whole status bar (this would reduce 
complaints about not enough distinction between browser and content as well)

In all three cases the heights of the progress meter would have to be reduced by 
 at least 2px.

Yes, the progress meter aka barberpole is too tall; it appears to casual 
inspection to be creating an extraneous white region between the statusbar
and the taskbar by overflowing the statusbar -- in both MailNews and the 
browser. If there isn't already a bug on that, it deserves a new one.

OTOH, whatever has already been done to move the status messages away from
the progress meter in the browser is probably appropriate for the MailNews
FE as well.

This is not just a mailnews bug  but should be solved at the widget level 
consistently for all components. Re-assigning back to UI Engineering (Hangas)
