Description

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8a3) Gecko/20040823 Firefox/0.9.1+
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8a3) Gecko/20040823 Firefox/0.9.1+

When hovering over menu items that have a 'tooltip' attribute, the tooltip will
appear briefly, then disappear and the menu item highlight disappears with it.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Get a latest nighly build of Firefox
2. Get the GoogleBar extension
3. Go to the leftmost GoogleBar toolbar icon - GoogleBar options
4. Open the attached menu and hover over one of the menu items

Alternatively, look at any other menu with a 'tooltip' attribute.

With Firefox there was another bug - menu items without tooltips showed tooltips
of their parents. To solve this I've added tooltips to all my menuitems
(FoxyTunes Firefox extension). Now all the menus misbehave.

This bug seems to be the Firefox version of bug 254224, duplicate?

They seem to be closely related, as the whole behavior of the tooltips in the
above version seems buggy/jumpy. I can try and provide a more technical
description of that. Meantime, working with a branch version without these
problems...

I noticed the same on a firefox-trunk-nightly from Sep-08

the tooltip appears right under the point of the mouse pointer.
It probably grabs the focus and the menu item below loses focus and becomes
inactive?

On another installation
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20040831
Firefox/0.9.1+

the tooltips appear at the lower end of the mouse cursor. So they do not
interfere with the focus of the active element

That sounds like bug 147670. Actually, it's not the tooltip of the parent, but
the last displayed tooltip, that's used when a menu item doesn't have a tooltip.
