Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.8a3) Gecko/20040817
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.8a3) Gecko/20040817

The first time one chooses to get messages from a POP server after starting
Mozilla, Mozilla indicates the number of messages on the server, but does not
download them. Only after "Get Msgs" is clicked again are the messages actually
downloaded.

This also happens when "Check for messages every x minutes" is checked. When the
check occurs, Mozilla correctly reports that there are new messages on the
server, and the number of new messages, with the little pop-up box in the lower
right corner of the screen. However, the messages are not actually downloaded
until the user chooses "Get Msgs".

This bug occurs consistently with several different POP servers, but not with
IMAP servers. It occurs in Mozilla 1.7 and 1.8 alpha 3.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Enter Mozilla
2. Select a POP account
3. Choose "Get Msgs" and enter POP3 password

Actual Results:
A box pops up in the lower right corner saying "[account name] has x new
messages". However, none of these new messages are downloaded until I click "Get
Msgs" again.

Expected Results:
Mozilla should download all new messages the first time "Get Msgs" is chosen.
I just realised that this will work as expected if you select "Automatically
download new messages". Please disregard this bug.

I don't think I see why someone would press Get Msgs if they only wanted to find
out how many new messages they have, and not actually see them.

I don't read my mail in Mozilla, so I haven't experienced it for myself. As you
see it, does it download nothing at all besides the unread count, or does it
download the headers but not the message bodies?
Marking INVALID per reporter's Comment 1.

That bug seems to involve the password prompt.

Here's an unrelated bug that gives similar symptoms. It turned out to be what I
was experiencing. Appears to affect builds starting in Nov 2004 only:
