The result is undesirable. For example, if I type <asterisk>BOLDFACE<asterisk> in a message, send it to myself, then read it, the word BOLDFACE will appear boldfaced, but with the asterisks on both sides still visible. The formatting characters should disappear in the viewing pane. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.See description above seen in 0.7.2 and 0.7.3

Statistically, we have found that bug reports that have not been confirmed by a second user after three months are highly unlikely to be the source of a fix to the code. This still is a valid bug. I just tested it again on Thunderburd version 1.0.6-1.1.fc4 (20050720), and got same results. This was the content of my test message: *boldface words* and /italicized words/ are easy to spot. _Underlined words_ are often used to denote a title.
Reporter, does the issue still occur with the latest supported 2.0.0.x / Shredder trunk nightlies? (1.5.0.x is now end-of-life and the latest supported Thunderbird version 2 is 126.96.36.199)
This error still occurs in 188.8.131.52. The formatting occurs, but the characters that trigger the formatting still appear, as well. as in my previous note (2005-09-27).
This is not an error afaik. is there an rfc standard which indicates they should be hidden? see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Thunderbird_:_FAQs_:_Viewing_Headers#Enhanced_plain_text_features
