If preferences are set so that middle clicking will load a link in the
background and a link is middle-clicked that will result in something like "host
not found" or some other connection error, the URL is not retained in the URL
entry field. There is no way to retry accessing the link by reloading or
focusing the URL entry field and pressing return. This is essentially a data
loss and can be very annoying if the page from where the link has been
middle-clicked has already been closed in the meantime.
I think this was the standard behaviour since ancient Mozilla Seamonkey times. I
opted for error pages to get rid of this annoying issue.
Almost sure there is a dupe but I couldn't find it.

This also happens normally, when you open a link in new tab, and for some
reason, the new link won't load for connection problems. The result is a lost
URL, in the URL field. No way to retrive the URL, the "RELOAD" icon will not work.
I think this is a bug worth solving.

Connection errors or simply using stop command
Fixed in various places over the years; bug 231393 is probably close enough.
