Details
Currently, the root directory has a lot of good written articles: <http://www.mozilla.org/unity-of-interface.html> <http://www.mozilla.org/update.html> <http://www.mozilla.org/why-mozilla-matters.html> <http://www.mozilla.org/mission.html> <http://www.mozilla.org/mozilla-at-one.html> <http://www.mozilla.org/apology.html> <http://www.mozilla.org/browser-innovation.html> <http://www.mozilla.org/fear.html> There are also some other pages of which the purpose isn't clear, but maybe they should go to a separate bug. They do link to some of the afore mentioned articles though: <http://www.mozilla.org/mozorg.html> <http://www.mozilla.org/advocacy.html> Maybe a /articles/ directory should be created were those articles can be stored? I guess it will enhance usability and make the articles better to find. The /articles/index file will list all the written articles. I have already converted, as part of bug 151557, most articles to valid HTML 4.01 Strict. Now is nice time, imo, to organize them a little and give them some more credit.
Taking. As usual, feel free to poke me if I'm being slow.

Preliminary work at http://mozilla.inkedblade.net/about-new/history and http://mozilla.inkedblade.net/about-new/principles We'll worry about actually moving the files once the About section is sorted out.

(In reply to comment #0) > Currently, the root directory has a lot of good written articles: > <http://www.mozilla.org/apology.html> > <http://www.mozilla.org/browser-innovation.html> Those pages are outdated and should at least be updated before we move them to a better location. > <http://www.mozilla.org/unity-of-interface.html> > <http://www.mozilla.org/update.html> > <http://www.mozilla.org/mozilla-at-one.html> > <http://www.mozilla.org/fear.html> These pages are outdated beyond count. IMO they should just be removed.
They're dated documents: they just need to be indexed as historic documents, which is what I did with it in comment 3. The unity-of-interface article is not something that goes out of date. It could go out of fashion, but not out of date.

Now that we have the archive site up, it's probably worth taking another look at this bug. A History page is now up on the site at: http://www.mozilla.org/about/history.html This can be used to link to all historically interesting documents that aren't otherwise in the site navigation. I think we should be linking to these documents on the archive site though to indicate that this information isn't current and to avoid people stumbling across these pages on the main site and thinking they are up to date. For other types of pages that aren't related to history, like the unity-of-interface page, we should discuss how they fit in to the new site structure we are putting together. For reference, plans for the new organization for the site are on the wiki at: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Mozilla.org:Planning#Reorganize_Structure

I agree. It makes perfect sense to have a nice history on the about/history.html page with pointers to archive documents. Those pages are definitely part of history (and important part!) and belong in the archive.
I don't think we should be linking to the archive for anything we *want* available. I think ideally the archive site shouldn't exist: either the documents are updated and put in the appropriate place, or they're obviously wrong and removed, with CVS history available for those who want to do archaeology. Historical documents don't need a disclaimer about being out of date, like newspaper articles they merely /dated/.

Is this valid?

I don't think this specific bug about moving articles is valid now, but the point about having good history of Mozilla content available on mozilla.org is relevant -- that's another bug though.
