I like to read my mail in the order they are received, which means I sort my
message list such that the most recent message is at the bottom of the list.  I
type 'n' to read the next unread message, it displays it in the message body
pane below.

The problem is, my message list window has, e.g., 7 visible message headers, but
the window is scrolled such that 5 of those 7 lines are messages that I have
already read and there are just two lines for the unread messages.  And,
actually, there's really only one unread message visible in the message list
when I am looking at the current message.

The thing is, I'd like things to be reversed: I'd like 2 lines at the top
showing me the last two *read* messages, and 5 lines below it showing me the
ones I haven't read.  This allows me to see the activity for a particular
message thread without having to scroll the message list window down repeatedly.

This would be a great hidden pref.
