Used today's commercial build on windows (2000020108).
1. Install and launch the browser
2. Select menu option Edit->Preferences->Navigator
3. In the pane titled 'Home Page', set a home page in the 'Location" textfield.
4. Press OK button to close the Prefs window.
5. Observe that the font size of text in Location Box has grown bigger.

this is interesting...when i first tried to change the default homepage, the
fontsize in the Location bar didn't change...but after the 2nd attempt, the
fontsize *shrank* to a barely legible level! [same bits used on winNT.]
This is weird.
Hopefully my fonts bug fix will fix this problem.

I see it on Linux commercial build for today(2000020408). Marking Platform and

Anecdotal evidence that may not be useful at all, but I've seen this in other
instances than the setting of the home page.
This is do to the fonts size was not getting set.
Now that is fixed.
No longer a ptd since it won't happen unless you change the font size
to really big and then that is what you where asking for anyways.
Should we resize the URL bar to be really big?

I have steps to recreate this problem on windows and linux (today's builds)
1. Click mouse in Location Box
2. Select Edit->Preferences->Nvigator
3. Reset home page
4. Click OK
5. Observe that text has become bigger in size.

Cannot reproduce this using shrir's steps given on WinNT 4 SP 6a on PII
(nightly of 6th. Mar, 00). However, managed to crash the browser trying
repeatedly to reproduce this, probably because of bug 30638 . Can anyone verify
(and hopefully close) this ?

I see this problem. Now I don't have to reset the home page at all. Just
clicking in the locationbox makes the text in the field grow in size. See it on
linux trunk build for today. (03/17)

I see this all the time. Today's build (2000040616 i686-pc-linux-gnu) has the
bug. If you change a preference, then close preferences, the location bar font
is enormous. Close mozilla and start it again, and the font size returns to
normal. There are dozens of bugs that are related, but all of them are marked
as closed, fixed, WFM, whatever. So I pick this one because its subject is most
closely related :)

i cannot seem to repro this using either the mozilla or commercial bits
[optimized bits, 2000.04.07.09]. am running RH linux, with enlightement (wm) on
gnome.
shrir, d'you see this anymore?

Hrmm. I can't consistently get the bug to surface by changing the home page,
but I can easily do it every time this way:
1: Start Mozilla
2: Edit->preferences
3: Fonts
4: Change fonts to 24 points
5: OK
6: Type in location bar
Result, the font in the location bar becomes the size that you specified in the
font preferences, which is of course 3x taller than the actual location bar
itself. In addition, the background of the location bar becomes grey. Opening
a new window or restarting moz fixes the problem.
Is this a different bug?

I see this problem with the font setting that jwbaker mentioned above. Yes..it
is still there. The locationbox text grows way too big after I click in it.

It seems somewhat hard to reproduce, but on one instance I could still
reproduce this( on windows). Now, the Prefs->Fonts menu looks shabby (pull-down
menus appearing as lines and no selected values displaying). But I still see
this. It is easy to til see this on linux build. Just change the font size and
variable width font and press OK.

I think Matt is correct, fonts come up uninitialized from prefs,
so it's some small default size. Make any change, the
pref gets read, the resulting font size happens to be
much larger than the small default.
Try this:
start mozilla
open font pref panel, remember what size is there, "size A"
set font to some other size, "size B"
RESET font back to "size A", you'll find it wasn't as
small as the first time you started mozilla
Resummarizing, last summary was misleading I think.

Font prefs are getting read on startup, I just checked. The problem here is that
the location bar shouldn't be reading the font prefs *at all*. The location bar
is part of the UI, and content display prefs are none of its business.
Resummarizing.
This bug makes the location bar practically unusable after using the prefs
dialog, because editing, selecting etc behave as if the characters are in the
original font; so the caret/selection is in a completely different place from the
text it's editing/selecting. Upping to major severity.
