Attempting to install the recent security path on brendan's two linux laptops gets "unable to install ..../security/patch.xpi Read only" and the installation aborts, make you think that ftp file permissions are incorrect... in turns out that the diagnostic was really reporting at file permisission problem on the local system. when brendan made effective and real user id's root, then install happened with out error.
This should only affect non Extension Manager xpi's and in the case of this security patch it was initially packaged with incorrect permissions as well that affected Linux users. Also, Firefox no longer distributes patches using xpi's. When attempting to install into a location where I don't have access I received the following message: Deer Park could not install the file at <path and file name for xpi file> because: Access denied Is this acceptable?
*** Bug 307897 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
Based on the new error of access denied in comment #1 and lack of activity resolving -> wfm. All that is really needed to prevent this from ever happening is simply testing the xpi to see if it can be installed before distributing it.
