Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; FreeBSD i386; en-US; rv:1.7) Gecko/20040619 Firefox/0.9
Build Identifier: Mozilla Thunderbird 0.7.1 (X11/20040704)

[Note: I have configured Thunderbird to place all received and sent mails in the
Inbox - I have no other folders for email.]

Someone sends me emails using the following:

User-Agent: Microsoft Office Outlook, Build 11.0.5510
X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2900.2180

When I reply to these messages, they will not thread properly. The message I
receive from the Outlook user *does* thread properly. Some salient facts about
the message from the Outlook user:

- does not have a Message-ID header
- has a Thread-Index header
- has an In-Reply-To header (hence, it threads properly)

My reply:

- has a Message-ID header
- does not have an In-Reply-To header

The latter point can be traced back to the fact that the original email from the
Outlook user does not have a Message-ID header, and is the cause for my messages
not threading properly.

Is there a way to resolve this?

I suspect this happens to users on all platforms, but I've left it as a
FreeBSD-only bug for now.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
Do you mean your messages don't thread properly in Outlook?
Related/Dupe of it: Bug 252619
the outlook message does not have a message-id? That's not kosher. Can you
forward me such a message?
> Do you mean your messages don't thread properly in Outlook?

Nope. They don't thread properly in Thunderbird; specifically, any replies I
generate don't thread under the message to which I replied, but rather to the
top-most message in the thread.
> Related/Dupe of it: Bug 252619

That bug is similar, but uses Outlook instead of Office Outlook; I have no idea
if they are the same thing.

However, the emails I receive do not have a Message-ID, whereas the samples
provided in bug 252619 do have a message-ID. So there are subtle differences.

I'm not sure if that warrants a separate bug though.
> Can you forward me such a message?

David, I will send you a sample email soon.
Note:

messages from my friend sent before Sept 8 had a Message-ID header. Those after
Sept 13 did not. (I did not receive any email from her between those dates.)

My friend said the only change she made between those dates was installing XP
Service Pack 2. I strongly suspect that SP2 has borked something in Office Outlook.

Whatever the case, this is clearly not a Mozilla problem, but it does affect
Mozilla/TBird users. Perhaps this is an evangelism bug?

Simply shocking. Microsoft knows about it but apparently isn't going to do
anything about it.
