Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20041005 Firefox/0.10.1 (Ubuntu)
Build Identifier: Thunderbird version 0.8 (20040923) (Ubuntu)

Under tools-options-general there is an option to "play a sound" when new
messages arrive. I have "play a sound" checked with "Custom .wav file"
selected, and only get a static buzz instead of sound (both preview and when it
actually happens in the program). There are no apparent options/choices to
configure the sound with ESD, ALSA, etc.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.In thunderbird go to the tools menu and select options
2.In general section, go down to play a sound and click preview.
3. No way to configure sound correctly.

Actual Results:
Static, buzz, no sound.

Expected Results:
Have options for audio devices/drivers/etc of find ESD by default.
Confirmed in Thunderbird 1.0 PR 1 under Mac OS X 10.3
Selecting the preview button on the preferences panel for General -> "Custom
.wav file" will generate no sound after a .wav file is selected. No sound is
heard when new mail arrives as described in this bug.
I too am having this problem. I have a desktop with an AMD Duron, custom built,
and a Dell Inspiron 1100 Notebook, both of which are running Gentoo Linux and
Mozilla Thunderbird 0.8. The sound does exist and plays correctly using aplay
from the command line.
