Right now the download manager (DM) and the browser window are completely
independent, and when you're downloading something with the DM window turned off
- there is no any other way to check the download status, except opening the
download window. It would be find, if there was the download status icon, which
is animated during downloading, and static (or no icon at all) when no downloads
or download(s) complete. Clicking the icon would bring the DM window and
hovering on the icon would show tooltip with the total download status.
Maybe it looks more like the idea for an extension, but I think it doesn't.
