User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; WinNT4.0; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20041001 Firefox/0.10.1 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; WinNT4.0; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20041001 Firefox/0.10.1 The URL in question brought up an image informing "Your browser has blocked a popup successfully" and provides an "Ok" button. This will deceive user to click okay. Though this makes popup block ineffective, I am not sure whether this issue can be fixed. I hope there is Black List for website like this. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Enable popup blocking ( I have not tried by disabling popup blocking) 2. Reset cookies 3. Open http://indianexpress.com/full_story.php?content_id=56730 Actual Results: After the page is rendered. A dialog like *image* comes with "Popup Blocked!" as title and "Your browser has blocked a popup successfully". If you click Ok button, it opens a new link in a new browser. Hope they don't link harmful link in it, some firefox exploit in it.
Summary: Deceiving message to get around Popup Blocking → Popup Blocking can be compromised by deceiving messages.
This is a known issue. Short of disallowing new windows completely there's nothing that can be done. If site authors want you to see ads before you can view content they will find a way, whether it's interstitial pages like salon.com or a blocking <div> like time.com. At least those two cases are honest and users will either accept it or leave. Attempts like this one would seem counter-productive for a news site: why should anyone trust anything they say if they manipulate visitors with deception?
