On my POP email account, I have set "Check for new messages every 10 minutes" and "Automatically download new messages", and I do *not* have the following set "Fetch headers only", "Leave messages on server". All is working fine as far as downloading the messages is concerned. The problem is in the message shown on status bar. If I manually click the "Get new messages" button, and get messages, I see an appropriate status message in status bar. But if TB automatically downloads messages as a result of the above preference settings, the message shown in status bar is "no new messages" even when messages are downloaded.

Changed to "normal" because there is no other "peripheral" visual feedback in Thunderbird. I normally leave an email window underneath my IDE, and with Mozilla, I would get a message in the status bar showing email had arrived. Now I can't do this, though at least I can get audible feedback.

I still see this on TBird 2.0.0.4 pre, though the new "Show alert" function gets around the problem now. Still, the differing behaviour is there.

do you still see this with the 3.0 beta backup your profile before using http://en-us.www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/early_releases/

It's been a while since I routinely use Linux, but I setup a system separately from my production machine and found the following. System has Fedora 10 with all latest updates (kernel is 2.6.27.24-170.2.68.fc10.i686). The problem still occurs for TBird 2.0.0.21. The problem also still occurs for TBird 3.0b2. :-( Note that nothing is displayed in the status bar when TBird automatically checks and downloads mail from the server. Appropriate messages *are* shown if you click the download button. The problem occurs whether or not Alerts are enabled. The problem occurs whether or not TBird has the mouse focus.

Only one message in the console - it appears as TBird starts up. No messages during either kind of download. There are no extensions. Only the default theme. There are several plugins, presumably from Firefox. See attached.

Russel thanks for the information ! Is IPV6 enabled on your machine ? Can you follow the instructions at https://wiki.mozilla.org/MailNews:Logging and log the pop3 protocol (just to make sure there is no error in it) as I assume you are using Pop3, right ?

> Is IPV6 enabled on your machine ? I'm no expert on networking but here's what I see: o the /etc/hosts has an entry "::1 localhost6.localdomain6 localhost6" o the ip6tables service is running so the signs seem to suggest to me that ipv6 is enabled. > log the pop3 protocol... attached are two logs. One for the automatic download and one for when I click the get new messages button. They show what happens when I send a copy of this bug email to my gmail account - which is managed on TBird. Btw, both messages show up in the Inbox just fine. On another note. I am unable to help with this issue for about 3 weeks - I have to go out of town, and no Linux system.

Russell, I'm unclear what items are outstanding here (if any). can you update the bug based on your situation using version 3.1 or trunk build? Also, have I got the updated summary correct?
Summary: "There are no new messages on the server" after automatic download → "There are no new messages on the server" in status bar after automatic download with setttings "Fetch headers only", "Leave messages on server"

Well, as of 2009-06-08, the original bug as stated in #c0 was still present with TB 3.0. But now that I look at it again, TB 3.1.4, and Fedora 13, the original bug is no longer present. i.e. when TB automatically checks for new messages on the server, an appropriate message is now displayed in the status bar. So, bug fixes by stealth are good. :-)
